Unlike stone surfaces, these rugs absorb less heat while adding style through colors and patterns. They create a cooler surface underfoot for comfortable outdoor living. ## Importance of material choice Specialists highlight that rugs made from recycled PET or polypropylene retain significantly less heat than stone. These eco-friendly materials also protect pets' paws from burns. Brands like Dunelm offer 100% polypropylene options that stand out in the market. ## Expert insights Kirsty Barton from Alternative Flooring emphasizes how quickly stone surfaces heat up and the dual benefits of outdoor rugs. Reilly Gray of Suns Lifestyle notes that rugs alone aren't sufficient and should be paired with shade solutions for optimal cooling. ## Complementary solutions Rugs aren't a standalone solution for cooling entire patios. Experts recommend combining them with pergolas, shade sails, and light-colored surfaces. Affordable options include £34.99 sun sails on Amazon or £145.99 pergolas at B&Q for complete temperature control. ## Featured products Popular choices include Dunelm's striped rug (£35), Paco Home's waterproof designs, and RUGVISTA's rustic patterns. Made from 100% recycled materials, these products offer both sustainability and style for outdoor spaces. ## Where comfort meets style Well-chosen outdoor rugs with proper materials transform patios into comfortable summer retreats. When combined with other cooling methods, they provide both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits, enhancing your garden experience during hot weather. ## Sources covering this story - https://www.idealhome.co.uk/garden/outdoor-living/how-garden-rugs-cool-a-patio — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
