Disused Madrid factory transformed into automotive center
OOIIO Architecture converts abandoned facility into sustainable automotive hub.
1Industrial transformation project
A former kitchen factory in Madrid's Leganés district has been transformed into an automotive center by OOIIO Architecture. The project showcases a sustainable approach through adaptive reuse of the existing structure rather than demolition. While the building was reinforced for its new function, its original industrial character was preserved.
2Passive environmental strategies
The building features a new facade of vertical metal slats that provide solar control and natural ventilation. Photovoltaic pergolas generate energy while rainwater harvesting supplies water for vehicle washing. Mechanical cooling is concentrated only in occupied spaces to enhance energy efficiency.
3Functional space organization
The ground floor houses showrooms and workshops, while upper levels accommodate storage for hundreds of vehicles. Large ramps on both sides of the building organize vehicle movement independently from customer circulation. Offices are strategically placed on the first floor for operational efficiency.
4Architectural identity and technical integration
White metal slats mounted on mint-green steel substructures create rhythm and depth across the facade. Workshop chimneys and ventilation ducts are integrated into the facade design, emphasizing industrial aesthetics. Technical infrastructure becomes part of the architectural composition rather than being concealed.
5Environmental and economic benefits
The project reduces demolition waste while extending the existing structure's lifespan. Passive cooling strategies and renewable energy use lower operational costs. The facade design minimizes solar heat gain during Madrid's hot summers while allowing natural ventilation.
6Exemplary industrial architecture model
Leganés Auto Center combines functional efficiency, environmental performance, and strong architectural identity. It presents a model for adaptive reuse of industrial buildings while demonstrating practical applications of sustainable design strategies. The project inspires transformation of disused spaces.
