Perkins&Will's São Paulo Residential Tower: Harmony of Concrete, Wood and Greenery
Casa Arbo offers an architectural experience blending urban living with nature.
1Balancing Urban Living and Nature
Casa Arbo rises in a São Paulo neighborhood preserving traditional residential fabric. Designed by Perkins&Will, the project combines the spatial quality and connection to nature typical of houses with urban living. Studies since 2019 developed a vision beyond technical constraints. The building sits on a unique plot - narrow at front and widening toward the rear - establishing new relationships between built and open spaces.
2Design Born from Site Topography
The project leverages the irregularly shaped sloping site. This topography enabled innovative relationships between massing and open areas. The architectural solution emphasizes permanence and precision while avoiding excessive formal gestures. Natural light, proportion and material integrity guide the design. The 10-unit tower maintains scale with neighborhood's historic houses.
3Massing Respecting Neighborhood Fabric
Stepped massing reduces perceived height, harmonizing with local silhouettes. Integration with surroundings and enriching residents' daily experiences take priority over monumentality. Expanding pedestrian areas and adding street-level greenery shape the project's urban relationship. This approach reflects architecture's active role in enhancing public space quality.
4Greening Public Spaces
Project leader Fernando Vidal emphasizes Casa Arbo as urban design rather than just a building. Widened sidewalks and added greenery create inviting public realms. Nature becomes fundamental to architectural design. Abundant natural light, views and indoor-outdoor continuity are central. Spacious terraces extend living areas into landscapes.
5Terraces Enhancing Living Spaces
'Garden units' utilize the site's slope to deliver house-like experiences within a tower. Material choices prioritize simplicity and permanence. Concrete-wood combinations balance robustness and warmth, creating timeless character. The architecture's identity avoids reliance on passing trends. Structural clarity lets space and material qualities shine.
6Structural Honesty and Material Simplicity
Design prioritizes structural clarity and honest expression of elements. This approach guides technical decisions too. Rationalized construction systems enhance unit flexibility for future reconfigurations. Integration of architecture, structure and MEP systems delivers efficient solutions where performance and spatial quality complement each other.
7Integrated Systems for Flexibility
The project treats performance, comfort and spatial quality as interconnected dimensions. Spanning 6,070 sqm, Casa Arbo aims beyond typical high-end residential needs. Experiences shaped by light, nature and flexibility establish thoughtful urban relationships. The contemporary concept translates into timeless expression through proportion and material restraint.
8A Timeless Architectural Statement
Casa Arbo stands out through contemporary conceptualization and timeless execution. Perkins&Will's team views architecture as a tool strengthening connections between people, place and environment. This residential tower carrying qualities of traditional houses responds to São Paulo's housing tradition through proportion and scale sensitivity. The result is architecture deeply rooted in its context.
