Snoop Dogg Costa Rica Concert Cancelled Amid Money Laundering Investigation
Promoter Stockwell Entretenimiento cancels December show following owner's arrest in financial probe.
1Concert Cancellation Announcement
Stockwell Entretenimiento officially cancelled Snoop Dogg’s scheduled performance at Centro de Eventos Pedregal in Belén, Heredia. The event was originally set for 3 December 2026. Despite the promoter’s public assurance on 9 October that preparations were proceeding, the company announced the cancellation on 13 October without providing a specific reason for the decision.
2Promoter Under Investigation
The cancellation follows the 7 October arrest of promoter Don Stockwell. The Judicial Investigation Agency is probing three entertainment events held during 2024 and 2025 for suspected money laundering. Authorities identified approximately $859,000 allegedly invested by a group associated with Edwin Vargas García, who is suspected of having links to drug trafficking operations.
3Legal Status of Promoters
Don Stockwell and Hugo Benavides Barboza are currently under investigation for their roles in the financed events. Prosecutors have requested six months of pretrial detention for Stockwell, a motion still pending as of 15 October. Both men deny wrongdoing, and the court has rejected a separate request to hold Stockwell while considering the main application.
4Refund Rights and Procedures
Cynthia Zapata, director of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce, confirmed that ticket refunds must be automatic. Customers should receive money back via their original payment method without submitting individual requests. The ministry advises that advance payments should be held in guarantee accounts to safeguard consumers against such event cancellations or financial instability.
5Consumer Protection Guidelines
While the government mandates automatic refunds, no specific payment timetable has been confirmed for ticket holders. The Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce has directed affected customers to lodge complaints through their online case management system at meic.go.cr if they encounter issues. Currently, no replacement date for the Snoop Dogg concert has been announced.
6Conflicting Producer Accounts
Stockwell and Barboza have provided conflicting testimonies regarding their dealings with the alleged financier. Stockwell claims Barboza introduced the investor and denies knowing the funds were linked to illicit activities. Conversely, Barboza alleges that Stockwell possessed more knowledge about the financier than he previously acknowledged. Stockwell’s lawyer, Daniel Brenes, has formally challenged these specific assertions.
7Scope of Criminal Inquiry
The Judicial Investigation Agency is specifically examining the financing of three events from 2024 and 2025. Acting director Michael Soto clarified that the performers involved in those earlier shows are not implicated in the money laundering investigation. Snoop Dogg has not been identified as a suspect in any of the reports reviewed by the authorities.
8Operational and Reputational Impact
The cancellation highlights the risks associated with event financing and regulatory scrutiny in the entertainment sector. By failing to link the cancellation directly to the criminal inquiry, the promoter maintains a neutral public stance while managing legal pressures. Future projects remain uncertain as the company navigates the ongoing judicial investigation and pending pretrial detention requests.
