SBI Acquires Majority Stake in Coinhako
Japanese financial giant takes over Singapore-based crypto exchange.
1Strategic Acquisition
Japan's leading financial group SBI Holdings has acquired a majority stake in Singapore's licensed crypto exchange Coinhako. The deal approved by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) was completed on July 16. This move is part of SBI's plans to strengthen its digital asset presence in Asia-Pacific.
2Regional Expansion
SBI took over shares of Coinhako's parent company Holdbuild Pte., making Singapore its first acquisition hub in the region. The crypto exchange is operated by Hako Technology which holds a MAS license and offers broad services through its British Virgin Islands-licensed entity Alpha Hako.
3Japan-Southeast Asia Corridor
SBI plans to merge Coinhako's customer base with its financial infrastructure and international network. The group aims to develop services connecting Japan and Southeast Asia in crypto trading, tokenization, stablecoins and cross-border payments.
4Stablecoin Play
The deal aligns with SBI's JPYSC (yen-backed stablecoin) project developed through Startale. The company expects this integration to expand digital asset use cases and reach broader market segments in the region.
5Global Digital Corridor
SBI CEO Yukio Kitao positions Singapore as the key hub for a global digital asset corridor. Coinhako co-founder Yusho Liu emphasizes that this acquisition provides institutional scale and an expanded ecosystem for their next-gen digital financial services.
6Regulated Growth
SBI will continue investments in tokenized assets, stablecoins, on-chain financial products and cross-border transactions, all within regulatory frameworks. This move symbolizes traditional financial institutions' pivot toward regulated crypto platforms in Asia.
