DSA-Backed Ballot Measures See High Success Rate in Recent Elections

Democratic Socialists of America secured victories in most decided state and local ballot measures.

1Strong Electoral Performance

The Democratic Socialists of America saw their endorsed positions prevail in 23 out of 26 called state and local ballot measures on November 3. While 11 measures remain uncalled, the organization achieved a high success rate in the measures that were decided, signaling significant influence in specific local and state-level policy debates.

2Defeated Policy Initiatives

Three specific initiatives endorsed by the DSA were rejected by voters. These included Idaho Proposition 1 regarding reproductive freedom, North Dakota Constitutional Measure 2 for free school meals, and an Ann Arbor municipal electric utility proposal. These defeats represent the only instances where the organization's preferred outcome failed among the 26 called results.

3Opposition Success Rates

The organization successfully opposed four measures that were called, including Massachusetts Questions 3, 5, and 8, alongside Washington Initiative 645. All these measures were defeated by voters. Currently, six other measures that the DSA actively opposed remain too close to call, leaving the final tally of their opposition efforts still partially uncertain.

4Public Banking Challenges

San Francisco Proposition B, which would create a municipal finance corporation and public bank, remains extremely tight with a 144-vote margin as of November 5. Similarly, Berkeley Measure Z, aimed at funding affordable housing and green energy through a parcel tax, is currently trailing with 58% of votes cast in opposition.

5Wealth Tax Uncertainty

California Proposition 40, a proposed 5% wealth tax on individuals with a net worth exceeding $1 billion, remains uncalled. Current tallies show 55% of voters opposing the measure. The DSA also opposed two competing measures, Propositions 41 and 42, which were designed to nullify the wealth tax if they were approved by voters.

6Alignment With Democrats

The DSA and state Democratic parties shared identical positions on all 23 statewide measures on the November 3 ballot. Of the 15 measures that have been officially called, their joint position prevailed 13 times. This high level of alignment highlights a significant overlap in policy priorities between the two groups during this cycle.

7Rare Bipartisan Agreement

In a rare instance of alignment, the DSA and the Massachusetts Republican Party both supported Question 1, which successfully made state legislature and governor's office records public. Conversely, both groups opposed Question 3, which sought to establish a top-two primary system, and the measure was ultimately defeated by the state's voting public.

8National Organizational Impact

The national DSA organization stated that over 130 chapters across 43 states supported socialist candidates and measures. They claim to be poised to win at least 105 seats in elected office and ballot measures. This result is framed by the organization as evidence of a growing national desire for socialist-leaning policy platforms.
