Homo Faber 2026: 500 Craftspeople Gather in Venice's 'Island of Light'
Es Devlin curates a luminous dialogue between craft and contemporary design.
1Island of Light Concept
Homo Faber 2026 will take place from September 1-30 on Venice's San Giorgio Maggiore island. Curated by Es Devlin under the 'Island of Light' theme, the event brings together over 500 artisans from 70 countries. Reflections of Palladian architecture in water, giant mirrors, and kinetic projections add new dimensions to craft objects. Devlin draws from her personal experience describing the island as 'a fragile egg' when viewed from above.
2Craft Embodied
The opening installation 'A Language of Hands' immerses visitors in a workshop atmosphere. Devlin incorporates her philosophical approach about human consciousness extending from fingertips to hair follicles. Multimedia projections capture the energy of artisans who've just completed their daily work. This section represents a radical departure from traditional exhibition formats.
3Makers' Portraits
The 'Index of Artisans' section displays black-and-white portraits of participants. Over 500 faces reveal human stories behind crafted objects. In 'Alphabet of Objects', more than 100 works transform into shadow plays on a giant cylindrical structure. This dynamic presentation emphasizes the transient nature of craft.
4Dialogue with Nature
'Library of Lungs' in Fondazione Giorgio Cini's gardens interprets Venice's 'lungs' metaphor through wooden sculptures. 'Full Moon Rising' installation in the former swimming pool unites historic water vessels with water itself. 'Rooted Ascent' explores cork's potential through live weaving performances alongside finished pieces.
5Architectural Integration
'Infinite Birdsong' creates nocturnal atmosphere with backlit mirrors. Arches of the 16th-century monastery frame contemporary installations. Devlin invites visitors to experience her connection with Venetian lagoon through the 'taste' of words 'light' and 'island'. Supported by Michelangelo Foundation, the project redefines handmade value.
6Journey to Craft's Future
Homo Faber 2026 bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Devlin's vision looks beyond objects to focus on making processes. San Giorgio Maggiore's historic fabric gets reinterpreted through 21st-century craft understanding. The event provides a global platform emphasizing handmade significance in industrial age.
