South Indian Bank CEO Mahesh Pai Targets Growth Through Gold Loans
New leadership emphasizes organizational culture and retail expansion to drive sustainable banking profitability.
1Leadership Transition and Vision
Mahesh Muralidhar Pai assumed the role of CEO at South Indian Bank on 1 October, succeeding P.R. Seshadri. Pai aims to leverage the bank's existing tight-knit organizational culture rather than pursuing a total overhaul. He views the workforce's fundamental attachment to the institution as a primary driver for future operational success.
2Strategic Focus on Gold Loans
Gold loans represent approximately 25% of the bank's total loan portfolio, showing a significant 41% year-on-year growth to ₹26,603 crore. Pai intends to maintain this momentum, viewing the franchise as a core strength. While he anticipates some normalization in growth rates, he expects demand to remain robust in coming quarters.
3Financial Performance and Margins
The bank reported a net profit of ₹426 crore for Q2 FY27, marking a 21% annual increase. Pai expects net interest margins to climb from 3.33% to 3.50% within a year. This improvement relies on narrowing the gap between loan growth and deposit growth while shifting toward more profitable lending segments.
4Deposit Franchise and Casa Growth
Low-cost Casa deposits reached ₹43,310 crore, accounting for 32% of the total ₹1.4 trillion deposit base. The bank is specifically targeting trust accounts, societies, and associations to ensure deposit stickiness. Total deposits grew by 19% year-on-year, with non-resident Indian deposits contributing significantly to the overall liquidity pool at ₹38,203 crore.
5Retail and MSME Expansion
The bank is broadening its retail footprint by focusing on MSME lending across Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Pai plans to reduce low-yield commercial lending to prioritize higher-margin business loans. This strategic shift is designed to optimize the asset mix and support the bank's overall profitability targets.
6Credit Card Market Entry
South Indian Bank currently operates with co-branded credit cards through OneCard and SBI Card partnerships. Pai plans to launch the bank's first standalone credit card by the first quarter of the next financial year. This initiative targets both existing customers and non-bank clients across various income segments to diversify revenue streams.
7Brokerage Outlook and Valuation
ICICI Securities upgraded the bank's valuation multiple to 1.15 times, raising the target price to ₹63. Analysts at Nirmal Bang Securities highlight the bank's readiness to scale, projecting a sustainable return on assets between 1.25% and 1.30%. These assessments reflect confidence in the bank's asset quality and improved operating leverage.
8Structural Sustainability and Future
The bank is transitioning from turnaround-led profitability toward structurally sustainable returns under new management. By maintaining strategic consistency and focusing on high-growth segments like gold and MSME loans, the bank aims to solidify its market position. Continued delivery on these financial metrics remains the primary benchmark for future investor confidence.
