Canva Initiates Major Restructuring With Over 1,000 Job Cuts
Design giant pivots to smaller teams amid slowing growth and rising AI operational costs.
1Massive Workforce Reduction Announced
Canva is cutting 1,271 jobs, representing 22 percent of its total global workforce. CEO Melanie Perkins described this as the hardest moment in the company's thirteen-year history. The decision follows a significant slowdown in growth, marking the first time in a decade the design software giant has faced such a challenging period.
2Strategic Organizational Realignment
The company will merge its product, growth, and platform teams into a single unified product organization. By cutting management layers, leadership aims to return to small, empowered teams. This structural shift is designed to increase decision-making speed and ownership, effectively refounding the company to better navigate the next decade of operations.
3Rising AI Operational Costs
Canva delayed its major AI-led software update due to the high costs of serving over 200 million free users. Serving AI features has shifted the cost of goods from cents per month to significantly higher amounts. These expenses are directly impacting profit margins, forcing the company to re-evaluate its current service model.
4Valuation and Revenue Pressures
Canva downgraded its annual revenue forecast to 20 percent, a sharp decline from 38 percent growth in 2025. Consequently, major investors like Blackbird and Airtree have slashed their valuations of the company. Blackbird reduced its valuation by 17 percent, bringing the firm's estimated worth down to approximately 34.9 billion US dollars.
5Centralization and Hybrid Work
Sydney will serve as the primary hub for the newly consolidated product teams. Employees in hybrid roles will be required to work from the office two to three days per week starting in January. This move aims to foster closer collaboration as the company transitions into its new, leaner organizational structure.
6Support for Departing Staff
Affected employees will receive at least six months of salary and 12 months of healthcare coverage. Additionally, departing staff members are permitted to keep their company-issued MacBooks. Canva is also offering 10,000 US dollar grants to those interested in starting their own ventures, providing a financial bridge for their future professional transitions.
7Broader Tech Sector Context
This restructuring occurs during a difficult year for the Australian technology sector. Companies like Atlassian and WiseTech Global have also implemented significant layoffs, with technology workers facing the brunt of these reductions. The trend reflects a wider industry struggle as firms adjust to changing market conditions and the high costs of AI.
8Delayed IPO and Future Outlook
An initial public offering, once anticipated for 2027, has reportedly been shelved for now. Despite holding 1.5 billion US dollars in cash, the company remains focused on internal stabilization. Investors like Blackbird continue to support the long-term potential of the business, waiting for a more favorable market environment to eventually exit.
