Northern Corridor Bullet Train Project Approved for Delhi and Beyond
New high-speed rail network connects major North Indian cities with significant travel time reductions.
1Northern Corridor Approval
The government has officially approved the Northern Corridor of the bullet train project. This extensive network will connect Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna, Siliguri, and Guwahati. The project aims to drastically reduce travel times across these major urban centers, fostering better economic integration throughout North and North East India.
2Drastic Travel Time Reductions
Travel times are set to decrease significantly once the corridor is operational. Passengers can expect to reach Agra from Delhi in 59 minutes, Kanpur in one hour and 45 minutes, and Lucknow in two hours and 12 minutes. Furthermore, the journey to Varanasi will take three hours and 33 minutes, while Prayagraj is just 33 minutes away.
3Economic Accessibility Strategy
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the bullet train fares will be kept very economical. The pricing structure is intended to be much lower than current flight ticket costs to ensure accessibility for a wider demographic. This strategy aligns with the broader goal of making high-speed rail a viable alternative for daily commuters and pilgrims.
4Make in India Commitment
The entire construction project is being executed under the Make in India initiative. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that the infrastructure is being built by the youth and welders of India. This domestic approach aims to boost local manufacturing capabilities while ensuring that the technological expertise for high-speed rail development remains within the country's own industrial ecosystem.
5Kashi Station Connectivity Hub
Kashi station is being transformed into a major transport connectivity hub for North and North East India. The station design includes a massive waiting area, roughly the size of a football field, capable of accommodating over 50,000 passengers simultaneously. This facility is strategically positioned to serve as a central node for regional transit.
6Pilgrim and Traveler Convenience
The southern side of Kashi station is located just two kilometers from the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. This proximity allows devotees and pilgrims arriving from across the country to access the temple and iconic ghats easily. Additionally, the new Vande Bharat sleeper trains will offer overnight travel options between Banaras and Delhi for added passenger convenience.
7New MEMU Train Services
Alongside the bullet train project, 10 new MEMU electric trains are being launched in Varanasi. These services cover routes including Banaras City, Banaras Cantt, and Rajatalab. These trains are designed to facilitate short-distance travel for small-scale traders, local youth, and pilgrims, effectively addressing the transportation needs of a rapidly expanding urban population.
8Strategic Regional Impact
The integration of high-speed rail and expanded MEMU services represents a major shift in regional logistics. By connecting distant cities with efficient transit, the project is expected to yield long-term national benefits. This infrastructure development serves as a foundational step in modernizing the transport landscape for both North and North East India for years.
