1Thruster Flight Demonstration

Tesla demonstrated its next-generation Roadster prototype in Texas, showcasing aerial maneuvers powered by compressed gas. The vehicle floated over Tesla's existing product lineup, executed mid-air flips, and accelerated rapidly. Elon Musk presented the supercar as the company's final driver-focused car, targeting initial commercial production for 2028.

2SpaceX Propulsion Architecture

The prototype integrates SpaceX-derived cold-gas thruster technology to execute complex aerial maneuvers. The system utilizes two high-pressure air tanks holding 600 liters and roughly 250 kilograms of compressed gas. The car recharges its own compressed air tanks internally without requiring specialized chemical propellants during operation.

3Extreme Aerodynamic Downforce

Beyond flight, the propulsion hardware enhances ground cornering performance through extreme downward force. A specialized underbody fan system generates up to two Gs of suction, enabling vertical ramp climbs. Rear-mounted diffusers, attitude-control thrusters, and a retractable rear wing work together to dramatically improve track handling.

4Sub-Second Acceleration Targets

Tesla reported that the prototype achieved zero to 60 mph acceleration in 0.81 seconds during testing. Musk stated his ambition to reach speeds approaching half the speed of sound, while VP Lars Moravy projected a 230 mph maximum velocity. Modern Formula 1 vehicles typically reach around 220 mph.

5Cockpit And Controls

Inspired by aerospace designs like the SR-71 aircraft, the vehicle features seats molded directly into the structural chassis. The driver interface operates entirely through steer-by-wire technology, including a custom steering yoke, electronic brakes, and throttle. Tesla claims battery range will exceed 300 miles per charge.

6Variant Breakdown Structure

Tesla announced three planned model tiers for the vehicle on social media. The standard Performance edition is a two-seater without thrusters, while the limited Thrust version adds track-focused hardware. The single-seat Rocket edition includes full flight systems, available exclusively through an invite-only reservation system.

7Pricing And Reservations

Tesla initially promised shipments by 2020 after accepting $50,000 deposits on an advertised $200,000 vehicle in 2017. Current reservations require a $5,000 initial payment alongside an additional $45,000 due within ten days. Formal retail prices and delivery dates for specific trims were not disclosed.

8Complex Certification Obstacles

Bringing an air-capable passenger vehicle to commercial roads faces substantial hurdles across multiple transportation authorities. Any production model featuring operational thrusters requires approval from both the Federal Aviation Administration and highway safety regulators. Achieving regulatory clearance while preserving demonstrated flight features represents an unprecedented challenge for automotive certification.
