The 21-year-old Portuguese forward also contributed two goals in the Coppa Italia. His current form surpasses his previous season record of seven goals and three assists at Gil Vicente. ## Surprise National Selection The striker received his first call-up to the Portugal senior national team during a live interview with SportMediaset. Upon being informed of his selection by Jorge Jesus for the upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales, Varela expressed deep emotion, describing the achievement as a long-awaited career trophy. ## Filling Ronaldo's Void Varela's promotion to the national squad follows the recent retirement of Cristiano Ronaldo from international duty. The young forward is now expected to compete for the striker position alongside established players like Gonçalo Ramos and Fábio Silva, aiming to secure a permanent role within the team's new attacking setup. ## Unique Family History The forward's career is marked by a rare professional milestone: playing against his father, Fernando Varela, on November 10, 2024, in Portugal's second division. Gustavo described the match as the most significant of his life, noting the complex emotions of competing against his mentor while maintaining professional focus on the pitch. ## Developmental Career Path Born in Lisbon in 2005, Varela developed through the youth systems of Sporting CP, PAOK, and Benfica before his move to Italy. Monza secured his services this summer for 2.5 million euros, signing him to a contract that runs until 2030, reflecting the club's long-term investment in his potential. ## Coaching and Mentorship Monza manager Ivan Juric highlights Varela's significant room for improvement, noting his dedication to individual training sessions. His father, a former professional player, remains his primary critic and advisor, specifically helping him refine his positioning, defensive contributions, and ability to win physical duels during high-intensity Serie A matches. ## Professional Mindset Despite his status as the league's top scorer, Varela rejects the label of a star player, insisting he is merely a team member focused on the next match. He avoids setting specific goal targets, believing that excessive focus on future expectations can negatively impact a player's mental clarity and performance. ## Future Tactical Outlook As Varela transitions to the international stage, observers will monitor how he adapts to Jorge Jesus's tactical requirements. His ability to maintain his current scoring rate in Italy will be critical for his long-term prospects, as he seeks to establish himself as a reliable successor in Portugal's post-Ronaldo era. ## Sources covering this story - [Marca — Gustavo Varela: From Facing His Father to Serie A Top Scorer](https://www.marca.com/futbol/liga-italiana/2026/11/06/gustavo-varela-jugar-padre-pichichi-serie-sustituto-cristiano-portugal.html) - [Record — Gustavo Varela Receives First Portugal Call-up During Live Interview](https://www.record.pt/futebol/selecoes/detalhe/gustavo-varela-soube-da-convocatoria-para-a-selecao-durante-uma-entrevista-nao-tenho-palavras) --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
