1Modern Parisian Aesthetic Renews the Home

Crissy Zhang Design renovated the Parkhill residence in Melbourne, shaping it with a modern Parisian sensibility. The 265-square-meter home’s interior layout was redefined, while much of the structure was preserved. Softness and simplicity were prioritized over minimalism. Furniture and artworks were placed with refinement expressed through proportion, rhythm, and material control.

2The Role of Arched Openings

A series of arched openings were used to soften and reimagine the interior of the two-story home. Each arch was designed in response to specific architectural constraints. Some concealed irregular structural outlines, while others integrated the existing structure, reshaping the connections between rooms. This approach facilitated the home’s internal transformation.

3Fluid and Private Spaces

The arched openings visually connected the communal spaces on the ground floor, creating a more fluid circulation between previously disconnected rooms. At the same time, privacy was maintained for spaces like the study and library. This design moved away from generic open-plan concepts, establishing a dynamic spatial rhythm.

4Natural Light and Continuity

The visual connections and continuity between the kitchen, dining area, living room, study, library, and bathroom were enhanced. This allowed natural light to move more freely throughout the plan. Additionally, arched niches carved into the thickened walls were complemented by recessed timber shelving, providing additional storage space.

5Tactile Materials and Color Palette

Tactile materials with muted tones were used to evoke a sense of calm luxury. Limewashed walls, natural stone, and pale timber created a warm and comforting space. These materials supported the home’s modern Parisian aesthetic.

6The Signature of Crissy Zhang Design

Founded in Melbourne in 2023, Crissy Zhang Design has completed a series of residential and retail projects. The Parkhill residence reflects the studio’s focus on softness and simplicity. This project successfully exemplifies the internal transformation and architectural reimagining process.

7Other Architectural Projects in Melbourne

Among Melbourne’s architectural renewal projects are Kister Architects’ transformation of a 1910 corner shop into a family home and MRTN Architects’ house extension featuring a collage of red-toned brick, metal, and timber. These projects highlight the city’s architectural diversity and innovative approaches.

8The Importance of Modern Design

Crissy Zhang Design’s Parkhill residence demonstrates how modern design can create a calm and luxurious atmosphere in homes. Arched forms, tactile materials, and controlled proportions facilitated the home’s internal transformation, emphasizing the importance of architectural renewal. This project serves as an inspiring example for future residential designs.
