Layered Wood Design Defines SKIN1004’s SoHo Flagship
Korean skincare brand makes a striking statement with geological-inspired architecture in NYC.
1Nature-Inspired Architectural Concept
SKIN1004’s first U.S. flagship spans 9,900 sq ft in NYC, featuring layered wood designs inspired by eroded sandstone formations. The 2-inch thick MDF panels with stained maple veneer create a continuous topography that unifies product displays, seating, and the sales counter. This organic approach blends retail functions into a single sculptural element, reflecting the brand’s connection to natural ingredients through architectural form.
2Double-Height Entrance Experience
LMTLS Architecture removed the existing second floor to create a dramatic double-height lounge space. The ceiling’s wooden undulations guide visitors through the store, with the floor plan rhythmically compressing and expanding to create dynamic spatial sequences. This design accommodates both daily shoppers and special events, establishing an immediate brand impression upon entry at 470 Broadway in SoHo.
3Mirror Wall Expands Perception
A 9-foot-high reflective plane runs uninterrupted from entrance to rear, visually doubling the store’s narrow SoHo footprint. This strategic mirror placement amplifies the wooden topography’s impact while creating illusions of depth beyond physical boundaries. The mirrored surface reflects the brand’s nature-inspired millwork at full length, enhancing the premium retail experience through optical expansion.
4Integrated Lighting Solutions
Cooledge lighting systems are seamlessly incorporated into ceilings and casework throughout the store. The warm, diffused illumination complements the ochre- and umber-toned wood palette. A brushed metal column draws the eye upward to an amorphous glowing form that represents the brand’s contemporary vision. These lighting choices create atmospheric layers that change with visitor movement.
5Gallery-Style Product Presentation
The rear chamber transforms product displays into curated gallery objects, departing from conventional retail arrangements. A 12-foot-tall single-plane mirror frames a photo booth, while an LED wall screens brand films on loop. This space offers a more intimate discovery experience, inviting customers to engage with products as aesthetic artifacts rather than mere merchandise.
6Natural Philosophy in Constructed Space
SKIN1004’s products derived from pristine natural environments now inhabit an artificial landscape of architectural precision. Fabricated by Gilbert and Adirondack Studios, the stepped wood layers evoke geological time while housing modern skincare technology. This juxtaposition physically manifests the brand’s commitment to harnessing nature through scientific innovation.
7Innovative Solutions for SoHo Retail
The design creatively addresses SoHo’s characteristic narrow retail volumes through spatial illusions and multi-functional elements. The Nature Wall serves simultaneously as seating, display, and counter, maximizing utility without visual clutter. Open daily from 11am-8pm, the flagship demonstrates how architectural ingenuity can overcome urban spatial constraints while enhancing brand storytelling.
8Physical Embodiment of Brand Identity
SKIN1004’s flagship translates product philosophy into architectural experience, with modern interpretations of natural materials conveying the Korean brand’s global vision. This execution highlights the growing importance of three-dimensional brand narratives in physical retail spaces, where every design element communicates corporate values to discerning consumers in competitive markets like Manhattan.
