These tabs appear on the left side of the display, utilizing icons to maximize screen space. Users can expand the bar to view full website titles, maintaining compatibility with existing Tab Groups and Apple Intelligence-powered Topics. ## Adaptive Dark Mode Mechanism The new Adaptive Dark Mode targets websites lacking native dark themes. When enabled, Safari dynamically renders a darker version by inverting logos, adjusting text contrast, and rebalancing layered shadows. This feature intelligently modifies vector artwork and raised surfaces, ensuring readability while respecting the original design intent of the website's primary layout. ## Developer Control and Opt-outs Developers retain control over their site's appearance through a specific tag that prevents Safari from applying Adaptive Dark Mode. If a website already features a native dark design, the browser will automatically bypass the adaptive rendering process. Users can also toggle this feature on a site-by-site basis or globally for convenience. ## Enhanced Siri Browser Integration The December update expands Siri’s browser control capabilities significantly. Users can now command Siri to organize open tabs or clear site-specific history through voice prompts. A future update will enable Siri to synthesize information across multiple open webpages, allowing the assistant to answer complex questions based on the content of those sites. ## Apple Intelligence Tab Sorting Automatic tab sorting is integrated into the Topics feature within iOS 27. When enabled, Apple Intelligence categorizes open tabs to improve workflow efficiency. Users retain the ability to pin tabs by dragging them, and the system supports rapid switching between different Tab Groups, ensuring a seamless transition between various browsing contexts and tasks. ## Visual Consistency Across Platforms By bringing vertical tabs and adaptive rendering to macOS Golden Gate 27.3 alongside mobile platforms, Apple ensures a consistent browsing experience. The implementation of vertical tabs on desktop environments provides a familiar layout for power users. This cross-platform parity simplifies navigation, especially when managing high volumes of open tabs across different devices. ## Rendering Logic and Readability Adaptive Dark Mode does not apply identical changes to every website. Instead, Safari evaluates the specific requirements of each page to optimize readability. By selectively recoloring vector artwork and adjusting background luminance, the browser creates a customized dark experience that avoids breaking the visual hierarchy or distorting the intended user interface elements. ## Strategic Impact of Updates These updates signify a shift toward browser-level automation to improve user accessibility. By handling dark mode rendering and tab organization, Apple reduces the burden on both developers and users. The integration of Siri as a browser-aware assistant marks a significant step in evolving Safari from a simple viewer into an intelligent tool. ## Sources covering this story - https://tech.slashdot.org/story/26/11/03/2347212/ios-273-adds-vertical-tabs-adaptive-dark-mode-to-safari?utm_source=rss1.0mainlinkanon&utm_medium=feed — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
