1Coastal Refuge in Sisal

Nutum Estudio designed KatNap House as a contemporary residential retreat on the Gulf of Mexico coast. Completed in 2023, the small-scale residence occupies eighty-four square meters in Sisal, an ancient fishing and trading port. The structure anchors itself directly into the delicate and changing Yucatecan dune environment.

2Architectural Leadership and Collaboration

Lead architects Sara Ferrer Inaebnit, Pablo Rivero Vallado, and Josep Azuara Robles directed the design concept. The project relies on manufacturers GaiaDesign and Mesawa for curated interior products and materials. Photographer Rodrigo Hermida documented the finished spatial relationship between the built structure and its surrounding oceanfront landscape.

3Integration Without Landscaped Boundaries

The site layout explicitly eliminates conventional residential gardens, blending the residence directly with the existing shoreline. Access is defined by a narrow path that winds through dense native vegetation. This strategic choice preserves the natural coastal topography while treating the open beach as the home's primary outdoor environment.

4Compact Footprint Efficiency

With an enclosed footprint of just eighty-four square meters, the design emphasizes spatial optimization. Residential architecture on shifting sands requires minimal environmental disruption, avoiding excessive ground excavation. The compact envelope demonstrates how private holiday shelters can minimize structural interventions across ecologically sensitive coastal ecosystems without sacrificing essential functions.

5Responding to Fragile Dunes

Building on Yucatan dunes presents severe environmental challenges, including wind erosion, humidity, and constant marine exposure. Architects operating along this Gulf coast must address material durability against saline air. The house establishes a lightweight physical presence that respects natural dune migration and local native coastal flora continuity.

6Context of Port Sisal

Sisal carries historic significance as a legacy maritime shipping hub, now transitioning toward boutique residential developments. Balancing heritage preservation with new residential projects requires subtle architectural typologies. KatNap House reflects this modern regional shift, providing private living spaces that honor the port's traditional relationship with the sea.

7Material and Product Selection

The interior and functional fittings feature selective collaborations with Mexican design brands like GaiaDesign and Mesawa. Incorporating regionally relevant manufactured goods ensures functional longevity within tropical coastal conditions. The architectural team balances modern aesthetics with practical performance suited for a beachfront climate exposed to continuous ocean elements.

8Implications for Coastal Housing

KatNap House demonstrates how small-scale residential architecture can occupy sensitive coastlines without altering native ecosystems. Rather than imposing artificial landscape elements, the project uses natural barriers and existing sands. This minimalist methodology offers a practical reference model for future residential interventions across delicate Gulf of Mexico coastal regions.
