Apple's Upgrade leasing program could lock iPhone over late payments
Apple Upgrade program allows iPhones to be paid like a subscription.
1What is the Apple Upgrade Program?
Apple's new leasing program, Apple Upgrade, will allow users to pay for iPhones, Macs, iPads, or Apple Watches in monthly installments. This program offers devices on a subscription model, enabling users to spread high costs over smaller payments. According to the program details, users can purchase, upgrade, or return the device at the end of the lease term.
2What Happens in Case of Late Payments?
Apple is developing a system called 'Restricted Mode' for users who delay payments. This mode will significantly restrict the devices of users who fail to make timely payments. When Restricted Mode is active, users will only have access to certain essential apps, including Phone, Clock, Settings, and emergency services.
3Which Apps Will Remain Functional?
When Restricted Mode is active, users' access to apps will be limited. Apps like App Store, Phone, Clock, Settings, Wallet, Passwords, Health, Magnifier, and Accessibility Reader will continue to work. Additionally, safety apps such as emergency messages and medication reminders will remain active. However, access to social media, camera, and other entertainment apps will be blocked.
4The Role of the Financing Provider
Klarna is expected to step in as the financing provider for the Apple Upgrade program. Klarna will track users' payment history and decide when to activate Restricted Mode in case of late payments. Interestingly, the financing provider will determine how many missed payments trigger a lockout, which could create an inflexible situation for users.
5Resale of the Device Will Be Blocked
Apple is adding a new feature called 'Partner Finance Lock' to prevent the resale of financed devices. This feature will block users from resetting, dismantling, or selling the device to someone else. Integrated with the Find My framework, this system aims to enhance device security. However, it will not allow the financing company to track the device's location.
6What It Means for Users
While the Apple Upgrade program offers a new financing option for users, it imposes serious restrictions in case of late payments. Restricted Mode could negatively impact users' daily lives. Additionally, subscriptions continuing to charge in the background may create extra costs. Therefore, carefully reading the program's terms is crucial.
