Zelda: Ocarina of Time Happy Mask Salesman Quest Guide
Master the mask trading quest to earn rupees and unlock special items.
1Starting the Trading Quest
The Happy Mask Shop quest becomes available in Castle Town Market after you successfully open the Death Mountain Trail path in Kakariko Village. You must show Zelda’s Letter to the guard at the trail entrance to trigger the event. Once this prerequisite is met, the shop opens for mask rentals.
2Selling the Skull Mask
The Skull Mask is sold to the first Skull Kid found in the Lost Woods of Kokiri Forest. To reach him, enter the woods and take an immediate left turn. He stands on a tree stump; you must stand on the opposite stump while wearing the mask to initiate the transaction.
3The Spooky Mask Buyer
The Spooky Mask is purchased by the young boy playing in the Kakariko Graveyard during daylight hours. He wants the mask to imitate Dampé the Gravekeeper and his famous Grave Digging Tour. He pays the full cost of the mask, making this a straightforward trade for the player to complete.
4The Running Man Transaction
The Running Man appears on Hyrule Field only after you complete the third dungeon, Lord Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. When you return from Zora Domain, locate him jogging across the field. Wearing the Bunny Hood allows you to sell it to him for a significant profit of 200 Rupees before he sprints away.
5Mask Rental Mechanics
Each of the four primary masks can only be sold once to their specific buyers. While you can rent these masks repeatedly from the shop, the sale event is a one-time occurrence per save file. Ensure you have the correct mask equipped before approaching the designated NPCs to finalize the trades.
6Unlocking Reserve Masks
After selling all four initial masks, the Happy Mask Salesman grants you access to a special reserve collection. These masks are primarily cosmetic, serving as fun accessories for Link to wear throughout his journey. They do not provide monetary value but add a layer of customization to the classic gameplay experience.
7The Mask of Truth
The Mask of Truth is the exception among the reserve masks, offering unique functional utility. When worn, it allows Link to hear the internal thoughts of NPCs before starting conversations. It also enables communication with the mysterious Gossip Stones marked with the Sheikah Eye symbol, providing players with hints and lore.
8Strategic Quest Importance
Completing this quest is essential for players looking to maximize their Rupee count and uncover hidden narrative details. By interacting with the Gossip Stones, you gain deeper insight into the world of Hyrule. This side objective remains a staple of the Ocarina of Time experience, rewarding exploration and careful NPC interaction.
