1Microsoft's Fourth Cloud Region in India

On August 6, 2026, Microsoft launched general availability of its new cloud region in Hyderabad, Telangana. The three-availability-zone build represents the company's largest hyperscale infrastructure in India. Microsoft claims this investment gives it the biggest hyperscale cloud footprint among providers in the country. The new region marks the first concrete delivery against Microsoft's $17.5 billion India commitment announced in December 2025.

2$20.5 Billion Investment Roadmap

Microsoft's total pledged investment in India now stands at $20.5 billion. The company announced a $3 billion commitment in January 2025, followed by an additional $17.5 billion pledge in December 2025. These investments will be deployed between 2026 and 2029. The Hyderabad region joins existing Microsoft cloud regions in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai, plus two datacenters operated in partnership with Jio. The facility spans an area comparable to two Eden Gardens cricket stadiums.

3AI-Optimized Infrastructure

Puneet Chandok, Microsoft's India president, positioned the new region as designed to support AI workloads. The company aims to accelerate enterprises' transition from AI experimentation to creating durable business value. The infrastructure is located close to where data resides, teams work, and decisions are made. Microsoft emphasizes that trusted cloud infrastructure will accelerate AI adoption, particularly for regulated industries with data residency requirements.

4Solutions for Regulated Industries

Early access customers for the Hyderabad region include HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, PB Pay, and Adani Digital Lab from financial services and payments sectors. Financial services face the most stringent data residency expectations in India. Microsoft offers specialized solutions to meet these regulatory requirements. HDFC Bank plans to use Hyderabad as a dedicated disaster recovery region to complement its Central India footprint. The region provides regulated enterprises with in-country resilience options.

5Sustainable Datacenter Design

The Hyderabad region is engineered to India's seismic zone and regulatory requirements. Its cooling system uses air-cooled chillers that consume no water, implementing Microsoft's 'zero-water' design announced in 2024 for its new datacenter generation. The facility, comparable in size to two Eden Gardens stadiums, went live mid-2026 as scheduled in December 2025 announcements. Microsoft's design prioritizes sustainability while meeting hyperscale performance demands.

6Renewable Energy Commitments

Microsoft has signed long-term agreements for over 1,000 megawatts of new solar, wind, and hybrid power projects in India, with more than 630 MW already operational. Counterparties include ReNew and Amplus, with the ReNew contract directing approximately $15 million to a community fund supporting rural electrification and women's livelihood programs. In February 2026, Microsoft disclosed matching 100% of its global electricity consumption with renewable energy purchases, supported by roughly 40 gigawatts of contracted clean power across 26 countries.

7India's Growing Cloud Market

IDC forecasts India's public cloud services spending will reach $45.7 billion by 2030, growing at 22.2% annually, with AI spending expanding at nearly twice that rate. Microsoft India has recorded strong double-digit Azure growth over the past two years. Over 90% of NIFTY 100 companies use Microsoft 365 Copilot, and global Copilot paid seats exceeded 30 million by June 2026. Microsoft's fiscal Q4 2026 property and equipment additions totaled $35.8 billion, reflecting ongoing infrastructure investments.

8Role in India's Digital Transformation

Microsoft's Hyderabad investment represents a milestone in India's digital infrastructure transformation. The December 2025 program included Sovereign Public Cloud and Sovereign Private Cloud offerings for Indian customers. The new region provides regulated enterprises with a second local site for resilience without data leaving the country. Microsoft's approach stacks sovereign-ready capacity atop growing demand, positioning India as both a consumer and hub for AI infrastructure development.
