1Apple’s Grand Plan

Apple planned to use ‘Extreme’ chips in the Mac Pro to deliver unmatched performance. These chips were designed to offer twice the graphics and processing cores of its Ultra SoCs. However, the project was shelved due to high costs and limited demand.

2The Rise of Mac Studio

Apple introduced the Mac Studio as a smaller and more affordable alternative to the Mac Pro. Equipped with the M2 Ultra chip, the Mac Studio offered similar performance in a more compact design, weakening the Mac Pro’s market position.

3Intel-Powered Mac Pro Plan

Apple was also developing an Intel-powered Mac Pro, codenamed J170, featuring a new Intel processor. However, this machine never reached consumers, marking another abandoned project in Apple’s lineup.

4Cost and Demand Challenges

The high production costs and limited demand for Extreme chips made the project unsustainable. The Mac Studio’s ability to deliver comparable performance at a lower cost further diminished the Mac Pro’s relevance.

5The End of Mac Pro

Apple decided to discontinue the Mac Pro entirely. The company positioned the M3 Ultra-powered Mac Studio as its most powerful Mac model, offering up to 96GB of unified memory and rendering the Mac Pro obsolete.

6Apple’s Strategic Move

Apple’s decision to cancel the Mac Pro project was part of its strategy to optimize its product portfolio. Reducing costs and aligning products with market demand helped Apple maintain its leadership in the tech industry.
