1A Nostalgic Lego Masterpiece

Following Nintendo Game Boy and Piranha Plant sets, Lego designer Carl Merriam now recreates the 80s arcade classic with a $200 Donkey Kong cabinet. Approved by Mario creator Miyamoto, the set reimagines original game mechanics using Lego bricks while maintaining playable functionality.

2Functional Arcade Mechanics

More than decorative, the set features a working joystick and jump button for basic gameplay. The barrel mechanism uses original 1989 Lego pirate barrel pieces. The designer reveals conducting thousands of tests to ensure barrels roll slowly without jamming - a process that 'drove him bananas.'

3Miyamoto's Subtle Input

Merriam confirms Nintendo's close collaboration with Lego, sharing that Miyamoto was pleased with the final design. The team's only request was making poison barrels heavier - solved by inserting minifigure heads inside. The detachable Jumpman figure allows manual Mario movement for rescuing Pauline.

4The Barrel Pump System

The set's standout feature is its 14-barrel pump mechanism. Pulling the lever releases a barrel from the top while adding one at the bottom. With 20-barrel capacity, six can roll simultaneously. The designer experimented with countless prototypes to perfect this 'barrels of fun' infinite loop.

5Engineering Details

Lego studs, slopes and Technic beams ensure slow barrel rolling. The jump button works like a piano key while the joystick moves an internal lever system. Gravity automatically returns Mario to starting position. Merriam humorously notes solving these challenges required 'rolling thousands of barrels.'

6Collector's Opportunity

Priced at $200 launching August 1st, this set merges retro gaming and Lego fandom. Blending mechanical engineering with nostalgia, it recreates gaming history's iconic moments. Limited production could make it a valuable investment piece for collectors seeking unique pop culture artifacts.
