iOS 27 Brings Video Feature to CarPlay

Apple introduces video playback capability to CarPlay.

1Video Feature for CarPlay

Apple announced at WWDC 2026 that CarPlay will soon support video playback. This feature will be available in supported vehicles with iOS 27. Video playback will only work when the car is stationary and will switch to audio mode when in motion.

2How Video Streaming Will Work

Apple detailed the new feature in a developer-focused video. Video streaming will be enabled via AirPlay, allowing users not only to play but also browse videos. This feature will be applicable to apps like Apple TV and YouTube.

3Safety Measures

Apple emphasized that video playback will only work when the car is parked, a safety precaution. The system will automatically switch to audio mode when the vehicle is in motion.

4Current State

Video mirroring was introduced with iOS 26.4, but it is not as advanced as the new video browsing and playback feature. Current systems have specific hardware requirements, and many vehicles do not yet support this feature.

5Hardware Requirements

Video playback on CarPlay requires a minimum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 and support for H.265 or HEVC codecs. Additionally, 4GB or more of memory is needed. Older CarPlay systems may not meet these requirements.

6Future Expectations

Apple is waiting for automakers to implement this feature. So far, no manufacturer has announced support for CarPlay video playback. Therefore, widespread adoption may take some time.
