ICICI Bank Reports 20.1% Profit Growth in Q2 FY27
India's second-largest private lender achieves strong quarterly earnings amid improved asset quality metrics.
1Quarterly Profit Surge
ICICI Bank reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 14,843 crore for the second quarter of FY27. This represents a 20.1 percent increase compared to the Rs 12,359 crore recorded in the same period last year. The performance highlights significant financial growth for India's second-largest private lender during the quarter ending September 30.
2Interest Income Expansion
The bank's net interest income grew by 18 percent year-on-year, reaching Rs 25,339 crore. This is a notable rise from the Rs 21,529 crore reported in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Operating profit also saw a robust increase of 18.9 percent, climbing to Rs 20,575 crore from the previous Rs 17,298 crore.
3Asset Quality Improvements
Asset quality metrics showed positive momentum as the gross non-performing asset ratio declined to 1.2 percent. This figure improved from 1.38 percent in the June quarter and outperformed market estimates of 1.4 percent. Additionally, the net NPA ratio strengthened, moving to 0.30 percent from the 0.35 percent recorded in the preceding quarter.
4Provisions and Margins
Provisions for the quarter fell to Rs 851 crore, down from Rs 914 crore in the year-ago period and Rs 1,260 crore in the previous quarter. However, the net interest margin experienced a slight contraction, narrowing to 4.18 percent from the 4.36 percent reported during the June quarter of the current fiscal year.
5Leadership Continuity Plans
The bank has filed an application with the Reserve Bank of India to extend Pradeep Kumar Sinha’s tenure. The proposal seeks his continuation as non-executive part-time chairperson from July 1, 2027, until February 16, 2029. This extension aligns with his existing term as an independent director, previously approved by the board and shareholders.
6Market Performance Data
ICICI Bank shares closed at Rs 1,396.80 on the BSE, reflecting a minor increase of 0.13 percent. Exchange data indicates the stock has fluctuated significantly over the past year. It reached a 52-week high of Rs 1,479.90, while maintaining a 52-week low of Rs 1,187.55, demonstrating active trading interest in the banking sector.
7Strategic Capital Initiatives
Beyond quarterly earnings, the lender has been active in capital management strategies. Notably, ICICI Bank raised $17.88 billion under the Reserve Bank of India's FCNR(B) swap facility. These strategic financial maneuvers are part of the bank's broader operational framework to maintain liquidity and support its ongoing growth trajectory within the competitive Indian banking landscape.
8Sectoral Context Implications
The reported 20.1 percent profit growth underscores a resilient performance for ICICI Bank amidst broader industry trends. With improved asset quality and controlled provisions, the lender demonstrates effective risk management. Investors and analysts continue to monitor these quarterly results as key indicators of the bank's stability and future profitability within the Indian market.
