Mosley Thorold blends salvaged and natural materials in De Beauvoir home renovation

A Victorian house in east London gets a modern makeover.

1Modern transformation of a Victorian house

Mosley Thorold architecture studio has transformed a Victorian house in east London into a modern living space. The project features a textured palette of materials including concrete, brick, tiles, and metal, designed to develop a patina over time. The two-storey structure was preserved, while a rear extension was added to orient the house towards a generous garden.

2Garden-focused design

The project's philosophy centers around prioritizing the garden over the front facade. Nathan Mosley explains this approach as 'making the garden the primary focus.' The rear extension includes a spacious kitchen and dining area, centered around a custom-designed dining table and connected to the garden via folding doors.

3Architectural details and material selection

The rear extension is supported by steel columns and beams, which maintain the form of the poured concrete walls without straining the existing wall. Externally, weathered metal window frames were used, while internally, timber ceilings and a floor made from reclaimed tiles were installed. These materials offer tactile appeal and longevity.

4Design of the upper floors

The living spaces, bedrooms, and bathrooms on the upper floors feature walls painted in earthy tones, dark wood floors, and concrete basins. Mosley notes that these materials will develop a patina over time, resisting wear. This approach offers a modern interpretation of Victorian craftsmanship.

5Garden design and natural pool

In collaboration with garden designer Sophie Gordon, the garden was designed to rise gradually from the lower patio to a lawn. A previously unused corner was transformed into a natural swimming pool, accompanied by a sauna and changing area finished in rough stone and black timber.

6Other projects in the area

In the De Beauvoir area, other renovation projects are underway. Irenie Studio collaborated with architect Studio Dera to update a 19th-century house. Architecture For London added a light-filled extension to another Victorian home. These projects enhance the architectural identity of the area while raising modern living standards.

7Long-term impact of materials

Mosley Thorold considered how the materials used in the project would age over time. Concrete, metal, and timber are expected to develop a patina, enhancing their aesthetic appeal. This approach exemplifies sustainable architecture. Mosley emphasizes that Victorian craftsmanship is being reinterpreted with modern tools.

8The spirit of modern design

Mosley Thorold's De Beauvoir house offers a modern interpretation of Victorian architecture. The project stands out for its use of salvaged materials and garden-focused design. This approach creates both aesthetic and functional living spaces while contributing to sustainable architecture. Modern design carries the spirit of the past into the future.
