Block's Spiral Identifies Low Demand as Barrier to Bitcoin Payments

Stablecoins are currently outpacing Bitcoin in payment adoption for AI agents and commerce.

1The Adoption Gap

Spiral, a division of Jack Dorsey’s Block, released a report titled The Long Road to Bitcoin Payments. It highlights that despite technological advancements like the Lightning Network, Bitcoin usage for daily payments remains low. Major platforms are increasingly favoring stablecoins over Bitcoin for commercial transactions and AI agent settlements.

2Shift Toward Stablecoins

Large financial and tech companies are prioritizing stablecoins for their payment infrastructure. Examples include Shopify integrating USDC, Stripe’s acquisition of Bridge, and Google’s support for stablecoins via the x402 protocol. Currently, approximately 99% of payments processed through the Coinbase x402 protocol are conducted in USDC rather than native Bitcoin assets.

3Core Obstacles Identified

The report identifies three primary barriers: insufficient consumer demand, price volatility, and complex regulatory tax burdens. Users view Bitcoin primarily as a store of value rather than a medium of exchange. Furthermore, in the United States, spending Bitcoin triggers taxable events, which discourages its use for small, everyday retail purchases.

4The AI Payment Frontier

AI agents require small, programmable, and efficient payment solutions. While the Lightning Network is technically suited for these micro-transactions, current tools predominantly rely on stablecoins and traditional banking rails. Spiral suggests that the industry must bridge this gap to ensure Bitcoin remains relevant in the emerging machine-to-machine economy and automated services.

5Technological Maturity vs Demand

Spiral emphasizes that the problem is demand-side, not technological. Over the last seven years, infrastructure has improved significantly; non-custodial wallets are more user-friendly, and over one million U.S. merchants can accept Bitcoin via Square. Despite this, the lack of incentives for businesses to integrate Bitcoin remains a major structural hurdle.

6Proposed Strategic Directions

To accelerate adoption, Spiral proposes developing shared infrastructure that uses the Lightning Network for both Bitcoin and stablecoin transfers. They also suggest focusing on regions with high inflation, creating loyalty programs for Bitcoin spenders, and enabling micro-payments for content creators. These initiatives aim to move beyond incremental technical updates alone.

7Integration and Future Scenarios

The team is actively researching requirements for integrating Bitcoin into massive platforms like Meta, Shopify, and OpenAI. They acknowledge an alternative scenario where Bitcoin remains a store of value until volatility naturally decreases. In this view, daily payment utility would only emerge as a secondary evolution of the asset's primary market role.

8Call for Industry Collaboration

Spiral has opened a discussion on GitHub, inviting developers, investors, and payment companies to share data and experimental results. This collaborative effort seeks to determine if Bitcoin can transition into a daily currency or if it will remain digital gold. The outcome will likely shape the future of global payment networks.
