Atelier Guo's Sugar House Project
Transformation of a historic sugar refinery in Yangshuo.
1Project Origins
The old state-owned sugar refinery in Yangshuo was restored by architect Zhao Chongxin between 2013-2017. Dong Gong then designed the guest rooms and overall layout, establishing the hotel's basic spatial framework.
2Sugar House+ Initiative
Launched in 2022, the project aims to connect underutilized scattered spaces through newly built small structures. This approach unlocks the site's latent potential.
3Architectural Approach
Atelier Guo introduces new functions to the area with structures like the Waterside Pavilion, Hillside Pavilion, and DJ booth. The Qushui Restaurant is another completed component of the project.
4Spatial Connection
The project serves as a bridge between the existing hotel area and the surrounding natural landscape. New structures blend historical texture with modern needs.
5Material Usage
A minimalist aesthetic is achieved through predominant use of concrete. This choice also references the region's industrial past.
6Tourism Impact
The project aims to preserve Yangshuo's cultural heritage while enhancing its tourist appeal. It symbolizes the transformation of a historic industrial site into a contemporary lifestyle hub.
