Alonakia House: Integrating Cycladic Topography in Antiparos
React Architects designs a 350-square-meter residence seamlessly embedded into the rugged Aegean hillside.
1Topographical Design Philosophy
The Alonakia House project, completed in 2025, spans 350 square meters on a steep, west-facing slope in Antiparos. React Architects rejected the concept of a singular object, opting instead to treat the dwelling as a direct continuation of the existing terrain. This approach ensures the structure remains inseparable from the rugged ground.
2Strategic Site Orientation
Positioned to overlook the open Aegean Sea, the residence capitalizes on the long horizon of the setting sun. The design process began by analyzing the specific conditions of the site, translating the inherent characteristics of the Cycladic landscape into a contemporary living space that respects the natural, steep incline of the hillside.
3Collaborative Engineering Framework
The project involved a multidisciplinary team to address complex structural and environmental challenges. TEKEM Consulting Engineers managed MEP systems, while Paros Prime Construction provided structural consulting and project management. Landscape architecture was handled by Eva Papadimitriou, ensuring that the exterior environment complements the architectural form and the surrounding rugged, natural terrain.
4Materiality and Lighting Integration
The material palette emphasizes a blend of wood, glass, and stone to maintain visual harmony with the environment. Lighting design, executed by HALO Lighting SA, plays a critical role in defining the interior and exterior spaces. These elements work in tandem to highlight the textures of the building materials against the landscape.
5Project Management Execution
React Architects collaborated closely with Paros Prime Construction to oversee the complex build process. Given the steep nature of the site, the project management team had to coordinate precise logistics to ensure the structural integrity of the house. This partnership was essential for realizing the vision of a building embedded within the slope.
6Design Team Contributions
The design team, led by Natasha Deliyianni and Yiorgos Spiridonos, included Andreas Androulakakis and Tatiana Tzanavara. Their collective effort focused on translating traditional Cycladic landscape features into modern residential architecture. This team-based approach allowed for the successful integration of complex engineering requirements with the aesthetic goals of the residential project.
7Technical Specifications Overview
The 350-square-meter residence utilizes products from various manufacturers including Contain, Develime, and FILPRO. These components were selected to align with the project's contemporary design language. The technical documentation highlights a commitment to high-quality finishes, ensuring that the house functions as both a luxury dwelling and a piece of site-specific architectural art.
8Architectural Significance
Alonakia House serves as a case study for contemporary residential design in sensitive coastal environments. By prioritizing the relationship between the built form and the natural topography, the project demonstrates how modern architecture can coexist with rugged terrain. It stands as a notable example of 2025 architectural practice in the Aegean region.
