Modern details and light-filled spaces in a 1980s postmodern landmark

1Revitalizing a postmodern icon

Architecture studio KTGY has completely transformed the interiors of the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago's Millennium Park. Originally designed by HOK in the 1980s, the hotel is renowned for its neoclassical columns and oxidized copper turrets that make it a postmodern masterpiece. The renovation focused particularly on premium rooms and lobbies, with 83 rooms, meeting spaces, and a second-floor terrace receiving updates.

2Bringing architectural details indoors

KTGY's design team translated the building's postmodern facade elements into interior spaces. Hidden windows were uncovered in the Rouge meeting room, and a sunken floor was raised. The spaces feature abstract chandeliers, textured sideboards, and LED sconces, blending modern color schemes with preserved 1980s decorative details. Bronze accents and lighter tones brightened the rooms significantly.

315th floor lounge transformation

KTGY completely redesigned the 15th-floor lounge to create a cozier atmosphere. New flooring and finishes were installed, complemented by the addition of a library area to enhance homeliness. On the second-floor terrace, patterned wood flooring meets fluted wall details painted matte green. Both spaces successfully merge 1980s character with contemporary touches.

4Nods to Fairmont's châteauesque style

The project incorporates references to Fairmont's signature castle-like aesthetic. While preserving original elements like the oxidized copper turret and neoclassical columns, the elongated body emphasizes verticality for a modern skyscraper feel. This duality defines the building's 'postmodern' label. KTGY balanced historical and industrial elements to strengthen the hotel's identity.

5Contributing to Chicago's architectural legacy

Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park joins dozens of architectural icons in the city center. Neighboring significant structures like Edward Durell Stone's AON Center and Studio Gang's Aqua, the hotel's refreshed interiors make it more appealing to tourists and business travelers alike. The project offers a contemporary addition to Chicago's rich architectural tapestry.

6Redefining light and space

One of KTGY's primary goals was illuminating the hotel's darker spaces. Lighter color palettes, strategic lighting solutions, and increased glass surfaces optimized natural light penetration. In premium rooms, bronze accents and reflective surfaces created an airier perception of space, dramatically improving the guest experience.

7Architectural discoveries and surprises

During renovation, KTGY uncovered numerous hidden original design details. Interventions like revealing windows and raising floors in the Rouge meeting room unlocked the space's full potential. These discoveries provided some of the project's most exciting moments while reinforcing the hotel's historical character.

8Setting new luxury standards

Fairmont's renewed interiors hint at the future of luxury hospitality. This project, where postmodern architecture's historical fabric meets contemporary comfort, aims to become an industry benchmark. Strengthening Fairmont's position in Chicago's competitive tourism and convention market, the renovation also reflects the brand's global vision.
