The Oldest iPhone Model Eligible for Apple's Trade-In Program
2017's iPhone 8 is still accepted for trade-in credit.
1How the trade-in program works
Apple's trade-in program allows you to get credit towards a new iPhone by trading in your old device. The oldest eligible model is the iPhone 8, released in 2017. You need to specify whether your device is in 'Good' or 'Damaged' condition. Minor scratches and dents still qualify as 'Good'. An iPhone 8 in good condition is valued at $35.
2Values for different models
An iPhone 8 Plus in good condition gets $40, while a damaged one gets $10. The iPhone X is worth $60 in good condition but has no value if damaged. These are estimated values and may decrease after inspection. Older models like the iPhone 5 aren't eligible for credit and are only recycled.
3Trade-in for other Apple devices
The program isn't limited to iPhones - it also includes iPads (up to $690), Macs (up to $2,045), and Apple Watches (up to $305). These devices require entering a serial number. Products like HomePod, Apple TV, and AirPods are only eligible for recycling with no credit offered.
4Android to iPhone switchers
Android users can trade in select models (Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, OnePlus, and Huawei) too, though values are lower than Apple devices. For example, a 128GB Pixel 9 Pro in good condition gets $255, while a 1TB model gets $315. A Pixel 6 Pro is valued at $50 regardless of storage capacity.
5Online vs in-store process
For online trade-ins, Apple mails you a prepaid shipping kit. In-store trade-ins don't require appointments. In both cases, backing up your device and signing out of your Apple ID is recommended. Credit can be applied to new purchases or an Apple Gift Card.
6Payment options
For upfront payments, credit is refunded after device verification. Those using Apple Card or carrier financing see the trade-in value deducted from monthly payments. The gift card option is available for those not making immediate purchases.
7Accessories situation
Chargers and accessories aren't required for trade-in. Apple will recycle them if you choose, but there's no need to surrender usable accessories. This allows users to keep necessary peripherals.
8Why this program matters
Given iPhones' high prices, the trade-in program helps users save on upgrades while reducing e-waste. It serves dual purposes - building customer loyalty and supporting Apple's sustainability goals through device recycling and reuse initiatives.
