Iconic characters like Mickey Mouse, Buzz Lightyear, and The Simpsons took the stage in live sports. This project, led by ESPN's creative production team, aimed to create 'magical moments in sports.' Under Michael 'Spike' Szykowny's leadership, the team merged Disney and Pixar characters with sports, attracting a new audience. ## The Role of Technology Advanced player tracking systems power the live animations. NFL Next Gen Stats and Sony's Hawk-Eye Innovations record player movements in real-time, enabling animated characters to replicate them. Commentators use VR headsets to sync with their animated avatars. Pixar's creative director Jay Ward highlighted this project as a perfect blend of technology and storytelling. ## Toy Story-Themed Football Adventure The 2023 Toy Story-themed Funday Football match featured real players as toy-sized versions in Andy's room. Slinky Dog served as the 1st and 10 marker, while three-eyed aliens operated a claw machine to drop the ball. Duke Caboom's halftime show and Pixar-style commentator Drew Carter added flair. This broadcast showcased how animation and sports can merge entertainingly. ## Monsters, Inc. Takes the Field The second Funday Football broadcast, themed around Monsters, Inc., required entirely new animations. Random players became Mike and Sulley, while others appeared as animated versions of themselves. Roz acted as a sideline reporter. Original voice actors from the film joined the project, breathing new life into the 25-year-old movie. ## Mickey and Friends in NBA Action Last year's Christmas special 'Dunk the Halls' featured Mickey Mouse and friends on an NBA court designed to replicate Main Street, USA, at Walt Disney World. Animators from Walt Disney Studios ensured every detail was perfect. Disney legend Eric Goldberg sketched hundreds of potential character actions for the game. ## Hockey Meets Inside Out ESPN's NHL broadcast used an Inside Out theme, making the game appear as if it were happening in Riley's mind while she slept. The ESPN Beyond Sports team built Hockey Island in 3D, combining NHL player and puck data with Sony Hawk-Eye Innovations' optical tracking. This broadcast demonstrated animation's deep integration with sports. ## The Simpsons Join Football Fun The upcoming December 2024 Simpsons-themed Funday Football involved the entire writing team. An 8-minute original animated storyline will run throughout the game. Though the NFL rejected some jokes, the team found creative workarounds. Producer Joel Cohen called this a unique experience for the animation team, further elevated by Matt Groening's participation. ## Future Impact and Trends ESPN's animated alt-casts have sparked a new trend in sports broadcasting. These innovative projects attract younger audiences by blending traditional sports with entertainment. With contributions from giants like Disney and Pixar, they push the boundaries of technology and creativity. The 1-minute live delay allows the animation team to advance the storyline dynamically. ESPN plans to expand this format, continuing to merge sports and entertainment. ## Sources covering this story - https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/behind-the-scenes-espn-animated-sports-alt-cast-disney-pixar/ — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
