Tegan and Sara Release Two New Holiday Songs
The duo embraces the festive season with original tracks and nostalgic holiday themes.
1New Holiday Tracks Released
Tegan and Sara have officially entered the holiday season by releasing two original Christmas-themed songs, titled I Love Christmas and A December to Remember. These tracks offer a blend of festive cheer and personal reflection, aiming to resonate with both enthusiastic fans of the holiday season and those who feel indifferent.
2Addressing Holiday Sentimentality
In the song I Love Christmas, the Quin sisters address the mixed feelings many experience during December. The lyrics acknowledge that while some find the season difficult or blue, the artists offer to carry the holiday spirit for them. This inclusive approach highlights the complex emotional landscape surrounding traditional winter celebrations.
3Personal Connection to Traditions
Tegan describes herself as a Christmas fanatic who maintains three trees and watches holiday movies daily throughout December. Despite this deep adoration, she admits that the anticipation of the holiday is often more enjoyable than the day itself, noting that she frequently feels a sense of depression by Christmas afternoon.
4Visuals and Creative Themes
The music video for A December to Remember features the sisters engaging in classic holiday activities like wrapping gifts and watching the movie Home Alone. The visual concludes with the duo wearing festive sweaters while toasting with champagne, emphasizing the importance of creating joyful memories with loved ones during winter.
5Origins of the Project
These songs originated from a collaborative project with Kate Cooper, written around the same time as the duo's 2024 graphic novel, Crush. Tegan decided to revisit and finalize these tracks after completing her first middle-grade novel, Merry Christmess, which was released in September, bridging her literary work with her musical output.
6Perspective on Commercialization
Tegan acknowledges that many people view Christmas as a commercialized, capitalist burden. However, she maintains a genuine love for the traditions and nostalgia associated with the season. She frames these new songs as a bridge, intended for those who love the holidays and those who find the period particularly challenging.
7Recent Musical Activity
This release follows the September drop of their single Our Year, which featured collaborations with Lights and Felix Cartal. This track marked their first new material since the 2022 album Crybaby. The sisters continue to maintain a steady creative output while balancing their music career with various writing and publishing projects.
8Future Touring Plans
Looking ahead, Tegan and Sara are scheduled to embark on a tour with Hilary Duff for select dates across the United States next fall. This upcoming series of performances will provide fans with further opportunities to experience their latest material live, following their recent focus on holiday-themed releases and literary endeavors.
