Corrugated aluminium-clad modern family home in Bratislava
Cechvala Architects builds a home in harmony with nature and flexible design.
1Nature-Inspired Design
The RDH house, completed by Cechvala Architects in Bratislava, stands out with its corrugated aluminium cladding. The three-storey home is located between a branch of the Danube River and the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. While the facades facing neighboring properties are more enclosed, the side overlooking the river opens up with expansive glazing.
2Material Selection
Durable materials were chosen due to the flood risk in the area. Untreated corrugated aluminium was used for the exterior cladding. This material absorbs daylight and the colors of the surroundings, offering a changing appearance throughout the day.
3Interior Layout
The ground floor includes a garage, fitness area, and utility spaces. A dark steel staircase runs through a high-ceilinged concrete void. The upper floor features an open-plan living space and bedroom. Exposed concrete ceilings and light timber flooring give the interior a modern feel.
4Flexible Structure
The house is organized around a modular structural grid, allowing interior partitions to be reconfigured over time. The placement of columns and the staircase enables rooms to be relocated without major structural interventions.
5Natural Lighting and Shading
Full-height glazing opens the living spaces onto terraces with river views. Cantilevered terraces provide passive solar shading in summer while allowing winter sun to warm the interior. Textile screens around the terraces can be lowered for additional shade and privacy when needed.
6Sustainable and Adaptive Living
Cechvala Architects emphasizes that this home can age with its occupants and adapt to their lives. Natural materials, flexible interior layout, and environmentally harmonious design meet the needs of modern living. This project stands out as a beautiful example of sustainable architecture.
