Potato Head and OMA Launch Circular Retail Concept in Bali

The Good Times General Store integrates sustainable craftsmanship with interactive material lifecycle education.

1Redefining Retail Through Circularity

Potato Head has launched the Good Times General Store within its Seminyak resort village. Designed by OMA, the space moves beyond traditional commerce by focusing on circularity and craftsmanship. It serves as a physical manifestation of the brand's mantra, proving that environmental responsibility and consumer experiences can coexist within a hospitality ecosystem.

2Architectural Fusion of Traditions

The store’s design, led by Ade Herkarisma, blends Balinese building traditions with contemporary aesthetics. The exterior features locally sourced alang-alang thatch, while the interior utilizes rammed-earth walls made from local clay. These materials provide a grounded, sculptural presence that complements the existing OMA House structure located at the beachfront resort complex.

3Material Palette and Interiority

Minimalist design defines the interior, characterized by clean geometries and a muted color palette. Pale terrazzo floors incorporate recycled bamboo offcuts, adding a graphic element to the raw material usage. Expansive windows and dark-framed portals create sightlines that connect the indoor spaces with the surrounding tropical landscape, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

4Tracing the Material Lifecycle

The store is organized into five interconnected zones that represent the lifecycle of products. The initial sections showcase artisan goods, books, and apparel. The final section, titled Wasted, features furniture and homeware created from discarded plastics. This collaboration with British designer Max Lamb highlights the potential of waste as a resource.

5Interactive Workshops and Education

Two dedicated spaces shift the focus from finished goods to production processes. One area functions as a natural-dye studio, utilizing food and plant waste from the resort. The other space hosts plastic-moulding demonstrations, featuring a wall of shredded HDPE plastic that serves as both an art installation and a functional material library.

6Future Expansion of Programming

The store is designed as an evolving creative hub rather than a static retail outlet. Current plans include the introduction of new workshops focused on weaving, upcycling, and sewing by 2027. These additions aim to deepen the public's engagement with sustainable production methods and the brand's commitment to reducing environmental waste.

7Strategic Brand Philosophy Alignment

Founded in 2010, Potato Head operates as a multifaceted ecosystem including resorts, nightlife, and wellness. The Good Times General Store extends this ethos into retail, following the collaborative success of the OMA House project. The initiative reinforces the brand's goal of encouraging communal interaction and transparency regarding the origins of products.

8Shifting the Retail Transaction

Founder Ronald Akili emphasizes that retail should transcend simple transactions. By educating visitors on who made their items and the materials involved, the store fosters a deeper connection between consumer and product. This approach positions the brand as a leader in integrating sustainability into the core of its business model.
