Norwegian Apartment Turns Downsizing Into Design Opportunity

A design marvel combining luxury and functionality in a compact space.

1Transforming Downsizing into Design Opportunity

This 1,300-square-foot apartment in Stavanger, Norway, was designed for a couple in their early 50s by interior architect Gudbjørg Simonsen. Moving from a large villa to a smaller apartment was approached not as a limitation but as a creative opportunity. The design is built around the discipline of subtraction and limitation, evident in every detail of the space.

2Storage Solutions Integrated into Architecture

Instead of traditional cabinets and wardrobes, storage spaces are seamlessly integrated into the architecture. Integrated units running along the central circulation area allow the corridor to double as infrastructure. This design recalls Danish designer Kaare Klint's emphasis on storage tailored to everyday use. The idea comes to life through sleek Poliform joinery, appearing as extensions of the walls.

3Open-Plan Living Space

The living room, dining area, and kitchen merge into a single open volume along the park-facing facade, while the two bedrooms and bathrooms are located deeper in the plan. The apartment's most striking feature is its complete absence of visual clutter—no freestanding bookcases, sideboards, or accumulation of containers typically permitted in larger homes.

4Every Object Serves a Purpose

Each remaining object in the apartment earns its place. Simonsen describes the apartment as 'suite-like,' drawing inspiration from hotel suites' careful balance of comfort and restraint. The owners, who recently downsized from a large villa, embraced an interior that prioritizes atmosphere over abundance.

5Lighting and Furniture Choices

Lighting and furnishings by Bocci, Ochre, and Apparatus enhance the apartment's calm, residential feel. These selections support the space's minimalist ethos while adding a touch of luxury. The design combines functionality and aesthetics with rarely seen harmony.

6Mastery of Spatial Efficiency

In a relatively small 1,300-square-foot area, every centimeter is thoughtfully considered. Integrating storage solutions into the architecture makes the space appear larger. This approach turns the challenges of small-space living into opportunities.

7Luxurious Interpretation of Minimalism

The project is a rare example that blends minimalism with luxury. While simplicity and functionality take center stage, the design is enriched with high-quality materials and meticulous details. This apartment proves that small-space living can be a choice rather than a compromise.

8Inspiration for Future Design

This project serves as an important example at a time when interest in sustainable and conscious lifestyles is growing. The creative solutions for small-space living could illuminate future residential design. Simonsen's approach offers a fresh perspective in the design world.
