I Switched to My Own Music Server But Lost Discovery Features

The trade-offs of moving from Spotify to a self-hosted music server solution

1Breaking Free from Subscriptions

Spotify's price hike prompted the author to reevaluate monthly subscriptions. Believing in digital ownership and having niche music tastes, they decided to manage their own music collection. The 2026 Spotify Wrapped report showed they mostly listened to a few songs they already owned. This accelerated the search for alternatives beyond rental music models.

2Technical Setup Process

The author installed the open-source Jellyfin platform on their existing home server. Jellyfin automatically indexed the music library by pulling artist and album metadata from MusicBrainz. When installing the Android client, they discovered the interface was video-focused and not optimized for music. This became the first major hurdle in the transition process.

3Finamp as the Solution

Finamp, a community-developed dedicated music client for Jellyfin, provided the answer. It offers a Spotify-like interface instead of Jellyfin's Netflix-style layout. Opting for the beta version from GitHub rather than the stable Play Store version, the author found familiar features like recently played, artist shortcuts, and shuffle play. Within a week, the difference from Spotify became negligible in daily use.

4Offline Listening Benefits

Finamp can download albums in original quality or transcode them for smaller file sizes. Offline mode only shows music stored on the device. The author notes this feature is invaluable in areas with poor internet connectivity. Gapless playback capability was an unexpected bonus for a volunteer-driven project. Overnight downloads of frequently played albums provided seamless listening.

5The Discovery Gap

The system's biggest drawback is lacking Spotify's personalized recommendation algorithm. The library only contains owned music. Last.fm integration requires additional plugins with reliability issues. While trying ListenBrainz plugin and standalone scrobbler tools, the author hasn't found a satisfactory discovery solution yet. Spotify's free tier remains a stopgap for broad recommendations.

6Podcast Workaround

For podcast needs, AntennaPod provides adequate functionality without additional subscriptions. The author's regular podcast listening habits are easily managed separately from the music system. This turned out to be an unexpected convenience in the transition process. Podcast management works independently and without complications.

7Cost and Quality Advantages

The new system maintains a music library without subscription fees. Files play in their original lossless quality and won't be affected by future price increases. With existing server infrastructure, there are no additional costs. However, this solution may not suit those with extensive music catalogs or without technical resources. The economics change completely without pre-existing infrastructure.

8The Future of Digital Ownership

The author emphasizes this transition supports digital media ownership principles. It required sacrificing Spotify's convenience and discovery features. The self-hosted solution demands technical knowledge and infrastructure. This experience raises important questions about balancing digital consumption habits with ownership rights in an increasingly subscription-dominated landscape.
