DHaus blends craftsmanship and spatial movement in Nanjing Townhouse
Carlo Scarpa-inspired design merges traditional craft with contemporary aesthetics
1Where History Meets Modernity
Located in Nanjing's Mendong district, this townhouse project reflects DHaus' vision of blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary architecture. As part of a 50-unit development in a historic area, the interior draws inspiration from a previous Parisian penthouse project, creating a dialogue between past and present.
2In Scarpa's Footsteps
Three principles from Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa - craftsmanship as architectural language, historical-contemporary dialogue, and choreographed spatial movement - form the project's backbone. The design pays homage to Scarpa's signature threshold treatments and stepped forms through deliberate spatial gestures.
3Sculptural Spatial Composition
A triple-height atrium serves as the home's vertical spine, gradually opening as it rises. The space combines the material warmth of the library concept with curved geometries from the gallery approach. A sculptural staircase emerges as the central architectural element, blurring boundaries between structure and art.
4Material Conversations
Timber, curved surfaces and carefully selected materials enrich the spatial experience. Intentional design decisions like the enlarged first step invite user interaction with the architecture. Every detail orchestrates movement and perception, creating a tactile journey through the home's volumes.
5Functional Art Piece
The project dissolves boundaries between furniture and architecture. This approach, developed from the Paris penthouse commission, transforms everyday objects into components of spatial composition. The result resembles a livable artwork where domestic elements participate in the architectural narrative.
6The Power of Architectural Storytelling
Nanjing Townhouse offers more than architecture - it's a masterclass in spatial storytelling. The gradual unfolding of spaces, material textures and light play immerse visitors in an emotional journey carefully choreographed by the designers. This depth of experience remains rare in residential design, marking the project's true innovation.
