A masterpiece where water meets land

ArchDaily Global1 min

1The Core Idea of the Project

The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi draws inspiration from the meeting point of water and land. This ever-changing boundary is seen as a symbol of origin, movement, and transformation. The museum is designed not as a singular architectural object but as a landscape shaped by natural forces.

2Architectural Approach

The museum is inspired by the geological formations and wadis of the region. Sculpted volumes shaped by time offer visitors a chance to experience natural history even before entering the museum. Architecture and terrain become an inseparable whole.

3Project Details

The museum complex spans 35,000 square meters and is planned for completion in 2025. The project includes various areas such as plazas, gardens, waterfront, galleries, exhibition spaces, a café, an education center, and laboratories.

4Design Team

The museum's design was led by Mecanoo, with contributions from firms like Egis Group, Broadway Malyan, and Pascall+Watson. The exhibit design was handled by Ralph Apelbaum and Barker Langham.

5Function of the Museum

The museum is not limited to exhibition spaces. Research and administrative facilities, multipurpose event areas, and public spaces are also part of the project. This indicates that the museum will serve as a cultural and educational hub.

6Significance of the Project

The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi is a pioneering project that emphasizes the harmony between architecture and nature. It offers visitors a chance to experience natural history both inside and outside, providing a new perspective on how architecture can integrate with the environment.
