Criminal Case Considered in Death of Three-Year-Old Daniel Aruebose
Authorities investigate the death of a toddler discovered in an unmarked Dublin grave.
1Criminal Proceedings Under Consideration
Detective Inspector Seán Earley has formally requested a six-month adjournment of the inquest into the death of Daniel Aruebose. This legal pause, granted under Section 25 of the Coroners Act, allows authorities to continue building a criminal case. The investigation remains active as officials evaluate potential charges regarding the toddler's death.
2Discovery of Skeletal Remains
The investigation began after skeletal remains were exhumed from an unmarked grave in Donabate during September 2025. This discovery followed a two-week search conducted by Gardaí. The toddler was last seen alive five years ago at his family home, yet his death was never reported to any official state authorities.
3Forensic DNA Identification Process
Forensic scientist Gillian Lavelle confirmed the identity of the remains through rigorous DNA profiling techniques. By comparing samples from the mother, Maria Aruebose, and father, Ciarán Dirrane, experts determined the remains were two million times more likely to be their biological child. These scientific findings provided the necessary evidence for formal identification.
4Trigger for Official Inquiry
The case surfaced when Department of Social Protection officials flagged a discrepancy in a back-to-school allowance claim. The child was not enrolled in any school, prompting immediate welfare concerns. Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, was alerted to the situation, eventually notifying Gardaí about the boy's unknown whereabouts in August 2025.
5International Investigative Scope
Gardaí have coordinated with law enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions, including the US, Brazil, France, Australia, Portugal, and the UK. Collaboration also extended to Interpol and the UAE embassy to track relevant movements. This extensive international cooperation highlights the complexity of the ongoing murder investigation involving the young boy's tragic death.
6Status of Suspects
Two individuals, a male and a female both in their 20s, were arrested during the course of the investigation. The male suspect was specifically extradited to Ireland from Brazil to face questioning. Both suspects were subsequently released without charge, though the investigation into their potential involvement in the case remains ongoing.
7History of State Supervision
Daniel Aruebose was born in December 2017 and lived in Donabate for most of his life. He had previously spent time in foster care before being reunited with his parents. Tusla maintained supervised care of the child until 2020, marking the final period of documented state oversight before his disappearance.
8Current Legal Standing
The inquest is now adjourned until May 12th, 2027, to allow further progress in the criminal inquiry. Meanwhile, the body remains at the Dublin City Mortuary as no relatives have come forward to arrange a funeral. The coroner has not yet released a formal cause of death for the child.
