1Strategic 5G Infrastructure Partnership

SpaceX has officially selected Qualcomm to supply the core technology for its upcoming Starlink Mobile ground-based network. This multi-year agreement focuses on deploying tens of thousands of sites across the United States. The nationwide rollout is currently scheduled to begin in 2027, marking a significant expansion for the satellite-focused company.

2Hardware Powering the Network

The network will utilize Qualcomm’s Dragonwing platforms to manage time-sensitive operations across all locations. Two specific chips, the QRU100 and QDU100, will handle radio unit mounting and signal processing respectively. These components are engineered for high performance and reduced power consumption, which is critical for maintaining such a massive, distributed infrastructure.

3Massive MIMO Antenna Integration

Each site will incorporate Massive MIMO technology featuring 64 transmit and 64 receive antenna paths. This configuration enables the simultaneous direction of signals toward multiple mobile devices. By improving coverage and capacity, this hardware allows SpaceX to utilize available spectrum more efficiently, addressing common issues like dropped calls in various environments.

4Expanding Spectrum and Reach

SpaceX has spent much of 2025 aggressively expanding its spectrum holdings, including assets acquired from EchoStar. The company intends to deploy its new network across several frequency bands in successive rollout phases. This strategy allows for a more robust integration of terrestrial towers alongside their existing satellite connectivity infrastructure for users.

5Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Connectivity

The partnership aims to accelerate the development of base station designs that SpaceX is building internally. By combining satellite capabilities with terrestrial mobile towers, SpaceX seeks to create a unified network experience. This approach moves the company beyond simple text messaging partnerships, enabling a more conventional and reliable nationwide mobile service.

6Operational Efficiency and Performance

Durga Malladi from Qualcomm emphasized that building a nationwide network requires extreme power efficiency at every individual site. For SpaceX, this efficiency is a fundamental requirement as they build their mobile network from the ground up. The technology provided by Qualcomm is designed to meet these rigorous performance demands at scale.

7Evolution Toward Future Networks

Both companies are positioning this 5G deployment as foundational groundwork for future AI-native 6G networks. While the immediate focus remains on the 2027 5G rollout, the current hardware choices reflect a long-term ambition. This strategic alignment ensures that the infrastructure remains relevant as mobile connectivity standards continue to evolve globally.

8Strategic Market Positioning

This agreement represents a major shift in SpaceX’s mobile service strategy. By moving toward a ground-based network, the company is diversifying its service delivery model. This transition from purely satellite-based connectivity to a hybrid model positions SpaceX as a more direct competitor in the broader national mobile telecommunications market landscape.
