Studio Libeskind designs Seoul skyscrapers as 'living artwork'

Six-tower residential complex planned for Gangnam district redevelopment.

1Innovative Housing Concept

Studio Libeskind has designed a six-tower residential complex for Seoul's Gangnam district as part of the Daechi Ssangyong project. The 49-story buildings will replace 630 existing housing units with nearly 1,000 apartments. The design was created in collaboration with Samoo and HJ Design Partners.

2Architectural Art Piece

The project aims to be more than just residential towers. Daniel Libeskind states the skyscrapers will function like dynamic artworks that change with light and movement. Light-toned facade elements will create curved bands that offer shifting visual effects as people move around them.

3Landscape Integration

The design intends to connect residents both with the landscape and each other. Curving gardens will weave between the residential towers and extend over the lounge area's roof. The stream-side lounge space will feature glass walls with views of Yangjae Stream.

4Luxury Living Standard

Samsung Engineering's Cheol Jin Lim emphasized that asymmetric and dynamic forms will set new standards for luxury residential living. The ground floor will include a sinuous lounge space surrounding a public square and circular water feature.

5Construction Timeline

Construction on Daechi Ssangyong is scheduled to begin in early 2027, with completion targeted for 2030. The project will be executed by Samsung Engineering and Construction Group, replacing five existing buildings in the area.

6Global Impact

This project strengthens Studio Libeskind's presence in Asia. The firm also has geometric housing complexes in Prague and plant-covered facade buildings in Paris. The Seoul project will significantly contribute to the city's architectural identity.
