1New Smart Home Hub

Amazon announced the Echo Show 16, a 16-inch smart display priced at $500. This device integrates Alexa Plus, Fire TV, and a customizable home dashboard into one unit. It aims to serve as a central hub for controlling lights, managing family calendars, making video calls, and streaming various entertainment services while cooking.

2Hardware Design Upgrades

The device features a full HD display offering 10% more viewing area than the Echo Show 15. Its redesigned aluminum frame is nearly 40% thinner, making it less obtrusive for wall mounting. Additionally, a new 10-speaker system provides enhanced audio quality for music, television shows, and video calls throughout the household environment.

3Advanced Visual Features

An optional Nanomatte display reduces glare by over 90%, which is beneficial for kitchens with bright lighting. The 13-megapixel wide-angle camera includes automatic framing to keep users in view. Furthermore, Visual ID range has been extended from 8 feet to 17 feet, allowing the device to recognize household members from greater distances.

4Customizable Interface Styles

Amazon introduced three distinct screen styles to alter functionality. Smart Home mode creates an always-on control center for connected devices like thermostats. Family Organizer consolidates shared calendars, to-do lists, and meal plans. Finally, the Photos mode transforms the display into a digital photo frame, complemented by a customizable favorites bar for quick access.

5Fire TV Integration

Built-in Fire TV functionality allows streaming from Netflix, Disney Plus, YouTube, and Prime Video. Unlike previous iterations, the device includes a physical remote, reducing reliance on voice commands or touchscreen inputs. This integration positions the Echo Show 16 as a dual-purpose smart display and television for high-traffic areas like the kitchen.

6Alexa Plus Capabilities

The device runs Alexa Plus, which handles conversational requests and multi-step tasks. Instead of simple transcripts, the interface generates interactive content like comparison charts and recommendations. New Cards organize past conversations into topics, such as weekend trip planning, allowing users to revisit relevant links, reservations, and details at their own convenience.

7Privacy and Subscription

A dedicated button allows users to disable microphones and cameras, addressing privacy concerns. While Alexa Plus is included with a Prime membership, non-members must pay $20 monthly for the full experience. These features require an active subscription to leverage the advanced AI assistant capabilities for managing complex household tasks and interactive content.

8Pricing and Market Positioning

The standard model costs $500, while the Nanomatte version is $570. A $100 preorder discount is currently available. With additional costs for stands, the total can reach nearly $700. This pricing is notably higher than the 21-inch Echo Show 21, which launched earlier in 2024 at a lower $400 price point.
