Water Glasses: Transforming Eyewear into Wearable Sculptures
XYZ Architecture reimagines sunglasses as minimalist, water-friendly accessories with paracord designs.
1Minimalist Reinvention of Traditional Eyewear
XYZ Architecture has radically simplified conventional sunglasses that often prove impractical in aquatic environments. By eliminating frames, hinges, and rigid arms, the design consists solely of lenses and paracord cords. This reduction transforms eyewear from optical equipment into wearable accessories. The lenses naturally suspend below the chin when entering water, eliminating loss risks while maintaining UV protection. The cord serves simultaneously as fastener, support, and storage system.
2Architectural Principles at Micro Scale
Since 2019, the Tbilisi-based studio has applied architectural concepts of structural simplicity and material efficiency to product design. Each lens is directly threaded onto the cord, making connection points integral to the aesthetic. The project distinguishes itself through precise proportions, optical quality, and strategically placed knots. This approach blurs boundaries between industrial design and architectural thinking, creating objects that are both functional and sculptural.
3Modular Lens Configurations
The collection ranges from single-lens practical versions to experimental three-lens arrangements. Multiple lens configurations transcend functional eyewear to become collectible design pieces. Colored lenses create jewelry-like aesthetics when draped across the neck and torso. Translucent surfaces and contrasting cords produce almost anatomical silhouettes. This versatility allows users to customize based on activity and style preferences.
4Collaborative Material Innovation
Developed with Italian optical manufacturer Divel Italia, the technical lenses ensure UV protection and visual clarity. Paracord provides durability while serving as a graphic design element. Unlike traditional sunglasses requiring separate cases, this design eliminates secondary storage objects. The wearer's neck becomes the natural 'case', demonstrating thoughtful product lifecycle consideration.
5Olympic Pool Photoshoot
Campaign images shot at Tbilisi Olympic Pool highlight both functional and artistic dimensions. Wavy lens profiles interact organically with body contours. Photographs demonstrate underwater/above-water usage scenarios while presenting the objects as art installations. These visuals perfectly capture the design's dual identity, positioned precisely at the intersection of utility and sculpture.
6Interdisciplinary Design Philosophy
Led by Levan Lominashvili and Ana Kachkachishvili, the studio works across architecture, furniture, and fashion. Water Glasses questions boundaries between product design and wearable art. The compact object maintains wearability, portability, and stowability without form compromise. This multifaceted quality represents the project's core innovation, suggesting new possibilities for functional objects.
7Sustainable Design Approach
The mono-material construction enhances repairability compared to conventional sunglasses. Part minimization reduces manufacturing waste while extending product lifespan. Users can personalize by changing cord colors or lengths, offering an alternative to disposable fashion culture. This philosophy demonstrates how thoughtful design can address environmental concerns without sacrificing aesthetics.
8Redefining Accessory Design
Water Glasses represents a radical paradigm shift in eyewear design. XYZ Architecture redefines form-function relationships, showing how everyday objects can be intelligently reimagined. The design simplifies user experience while adding aesthetic value. As both practical tool and artistic statement, the project sets an inspirational precedent for future wearable technology and functional art pieces.
