Spaced Linux: A User-Friendly Devuan-Based Desktop Distro
30-year Linux veteran crafts Compiz-focused, lightweight and customizable desktop experience.
1Three Decades of Expertise
Slashdot user crhylove channeled 30 years of Linux sysadmin experience, including IT directorship for 13 school districts, into Spaced Linux. Dissatisfaction with existing distros led him to develop this Compiz-based 3D desktop environment running on Devuan Ceres (systemd-free Debian). Though in early stages, the developer has been using it as his daily driver for weeks.
2Technical Foundation
Spaced Linux emphasizes Flatpak package management to minimize dependency issues. Devuan's rolling release model provides access to current software while maintaining stability. NVIDIA driver compatibility works out-of-the-box. Windows applications run via Wine, easing transition for new users.
3Visual Flexibility
The distro offers extensive theming options ranging from Linux to Windows 3.11 aesthetics. Users can emulate popular OS experiences like Android, Mac OS X, or Windows 11. Dark/light mode options enhance personalization. Compiz's 3D effects particularly improve window management during remote work.
4Performance Focus
The developer describes Spaced Linux as 'extremely usable, efficient, fast, and reliable.' Its efficient resource usage delivers performance even on older hardware. Ongoing voice command development will improve accessibility. Plans include open-sourcing the project on GitHub.
5Position in Linux Ecosystem
Spaced Linux offers new options for systemd alternatives seekers, Compiz enthusiasts, and minimal distro users. Its Devuan base maintains Debian compatibility while avoiding systemd debates. Flatpak emphasis provides application security and isolation advantages.
6Developer Vision
crhylove states Spaced Linux is 'exactly what I want to use.' Long-term goals include community-driven growth. Currently a one-person project, its open-source model welcomes contributions. His education sector experience informs plans for institutional adoption.
7Installation and Accessibility
While current builds cater to the developer's personal use, public test versions are expected soon. Live USB functionality will enable testing. Familiar interface options ease Windows transitions. Documentation and setup guides will be shared via YouTube.
8Enriching Linux Diversity
Spaced Linux breathes new life into Linux's greatest strength: diversity. Its customization and performance focus stand out. The developer's education background boosts potential for school and government use. It embodies Linux's 'user control' philosophy in purest form.
