ICON Uses 3D Printing to Create Diverse Home Concepts

A single system builds different home ideas.

1ICON's 3D Printing Technology

ICON is constructing diverse home concepts using large-scale 3D printing technology in Texas. The company has developed proprietary cement materials and software to enable programmable construction. From 2017 to 2026, 248 homes and structures were completed. This technology is used in a wide range, from repetitive suburban plans to custom curved walls.

2House Zero: A Blend of Traditional and Modern

House Zero was built in Austin in 2022, showcasing ICON's technology to architects. Lake Flato architects designed a 3,000-square-foot project using the Texas ranch house language. Low proportions, broad overhangs, and natural wood were used. 3D-printed concrete walls curve softly around rooms, with horizontal layers left exposed in the interior.

3Wolf Ranch: A New Take on Suburban Living

In Georgetown, ICON and Lennar completed 100 homes at Wolf Ranch in 2025. BIG developed eight floor plans and 24 elevations. The homes range from 1,500 to 2,100 square feet, featuring garages, covered patios, metal roofs, and photovoltaic panels. Repeated concrete bands reveal a different construction process.

4Community First! Village: A Social Housing Solution

Community First! Village in Austin has been supported by ICON since 2019. Developed by nonprofit Mobile Loaves Fishes, the neighborhood provides permanent housing for people experiencing chronic homelessness. ICON has recorded 117 printed structures here. Small homes are organized around shared outdoor spaces, offering compact private dwellings.

5Wimberley Springs: Luxury Homes

Completed in 2025, Wimberley Springs focuses on larger homes in Texas Hill Country. Homes designed from ICON's digital CODEX architectural catalog include BIG's TexNext collection. Homes reaching approximately 4,100 square feet reinterpret Texas architecture with deep overhangs and rounded printed volumes.

6The Flexibility of Programmable Construction

ICON's technology enables programmable construction of homes. This produces different results depending on factors like land, budget, architecture, and ownership. The technology is used in a wide range, from repetitive suburban plans to custom curved walls. This flexibility makes it easier for homes to adapt to different needs.

7ICON's Vulcan System

ICON's Vulcan system forms concrete walls on-site. Traditional construction methods are used for the timber roof, glazing, and other components. This mixture is particularly useful for architectural tests like House Zero. Printing supplies only part of the building and does not dictate its entire character.

8The Future of Homes

ICON's technology is shaping the future of homes. Programmable construction enables the rapid and efficient construction of homes that adapt to different needs. This technology is used in a wide range, from suburban living to luxury homes and social housing solutions.

9ICON's Impact

ICON is revolutionizing the construction industry with 3D printing technology. The company demonstrates the potential of programmable construction by quickly and efficiently building diverse home concepts. This technology could make homes more flexible and adaptable in the future.
