GitHub Universe 2026: Evolving Every Layer of the Software Stack

GitHub shifts focus from code generation to agentic software delivery systems for developers.

1Shift to Agentic Delivery

GitHub is transitioning from a code-centric platform to a comprehensive software delivery system. The focus has moved from writing individual lines of code to orchestrating fleets of AI agents. Developers now act as directors, setting the direction and maintaining accountability, while agents handle the implementation, verification, and execution of software tasks.

2GitHub Copilot App Capabilities

The new GitHub Copilot app centralizes the development lifecycle from issue creation to merge. It enables developers to write specifications, present design discussions, and analyze telemetry within a single agent-first surface. This tool connects various agents and workflows, allowing teams to direct complex work without managing every manual handoff between different stages.

3Copilot Fusion Model Orchestration

Copilot Fusion optimizes task execution by dynamically selecting the best AI model for specific needs. It evaluates requirements across reasoning, debugging, and code generation to choose the most efficient path. In testing, Fusion Max scored within two points of Opus 5.5 Max while operating at half the cost and 40% less time.

4Parallel Execution with Projects

Copilot projects allow developers to run agentic work across multiple repositories in fully managed, parallel sessions. This feature enables tracking progress and making decisions in one unified location. By automating the execution phase, developers can focus their time on high-level architectural decisions rather than managing the granular details of task completion.

5Session Continuity and Automations

Session continuity ensures work persists across the GitHub app, VS Code, CLI, and web interfaces. Meanwhile, Copilot automations enable AI-powered workflows that trigger based on events or schedules. These automations learn from their own outcomes, allowing the system to propose improvements for developer review, effectively creating a continuous learning loop for software.

6Advanced Code Review Max

Copilot code review Max provides deep analysis for high-severity issues, achieving the highest F1 score on ReviewBench. While Lite and Balanced tiers handle everyday reviews, the Max tier offers a more rigorous look at complex changes. This ensures that increased development velocity does not compromise the security or quality of shipped software.

7Enterprise Subscription Model Update

GitHub Enterprise customers can now access all Copilot features without requiring separate subscriptions. Users pay based on the AI credits consumed, providing greater flexibility for teams. Existing Business and Enterprise customers retain the option to keep their current plans or migrate to this credit-based model whenever they are ready to transition.

8Infrastructure Scaling for Agents

To support the agentic era, GitHub added 4 million CPU cores, 160 PB of storage, and 50 Tb/s network capacity this year. The platform is migrating to a multi-region Azure deployment and redesigning Git architecture. These investments aim to decouple storage from compute, ensuring reliability as global software production increases exponentially.
