Three Shipping Containers Transformed Into a Bright Blue Wisconsin Vacation Rental
Backcountry Containers utilizes industrial modular architecture to create a functional, riverfront retreat in Ladysmith.
1Industrial Modular Construction
Backcountry Containers utilized three industrial shipping containers to construct the Maison Flambeau vacation rental in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The design retains the original corrugated steel aesthetic while painting the exterior a vibrant blue. By stacking two 40-foot containers at ground level and one 20-foot unit above, the builders created a distinct, multi-level structure.
2Optimizing Interior Floor Plans
The project provides approximately 800 square feet of interior living space. Joining two ground-level containers side-by-side effectively eliminates the narrow corridor effect typical of single-container designs. This configuration allows for a wider kitchen area, featuring dark cabinetry, wood countertops, and open shelving that establishes a distinct cabin character within the steel shell.
3Functional Sleeping Arrangements
The interior layout accommodates guests through two dedicated bedrooms, both equipped with queen-sized beds. The second bedroom includes an additional raised single bunk to increase capacity. A large window positioned beside one bed integrates the surrounding woodland views, ensuring the compact sleeping quarters feel connected to the expansive 14-acre property outside.
4Dual Access Circulation
An interior staircase provides access to an upstairs office and sitting area that opens directly onto the rooftop terrace. A separate exterior spiral staircase connects the deck to the ground level. These dual routes allow guests to move between outdoor spaces without needing to pass through the main house, enhancing overall site flow.
5Extended Living Amenities
The property includes 1.5 bathrooms and full laundry facilities, supporting longer stays without requiring external services. The kitchen is outfitted with a full-height refrigerator and extensive cabinet storage for cooking equipment. These functional additions transform the modular structure from a temporary shelter into a fully equipped, self-sustaining vacation rental for guests.
6Integration With Natural Landscape
Maison Flambeau sits on 14 wooded acres featuring 600 feet of Flambeau River shoreline and one mile of private walking trails. The design prioritizes the relationship between the steel architecture and the natural environment. By utilizing the rooftop deck and ground-level patios, the project encourages guests to utilize the entire site.
7Modular SaunaPlunge Installation
Beyond the primary container residence, the project includes a separate modular installation known as the SaunaPlunge. This secondary structure features a four-person electric sauna and a river-facing hot tub. A patio and fire pit area complement the installation, further extending the project's modular vocabulary and providing additional outdoor gathering spaces for visitors.
8Strategic Spatial Allocation
The project's success relies on the deliberate distribution of space across three distinct levels. Enclosed rooms occupy the ground floor, while a smaller, private retreat is situated above. By balancing indoor comfort with extensive outdoor amenities like the terrace and riverfront trails, the design successfully expands the living footprint beyond the containers.
