Persian Red Voids Define Contemporary Iranian Villa

Carved openings and pitched roof shape this climate-responsive residence near Caspian Sea.

1Contextual design approach

CORNER Villa responds to its site near the Caspian Sea through an elongated east-west volume that maximizes southern views. The dual-pitched roof addresses local climate conditions while maintaining visual restraint towards neighboring residences. The design integrates with forested foothills and rocky terrain through strategic openings. Architect Nima Mirza Mohamadi conceived the project as a direct response to topography and light conditions.

2Spatial organization strategy

The villa transforms its corner site constraint into a defining feature through carved voids. These create covered entrances, terraces, and a central void that connects different levels. A suspended stair crosses the central void, linking attic spaces with northern and southern roofs. The design maintains privacy toward the residential complex while opening completely to southern landscapes through continuous glazing.

3Material and color palette

White brick construction forms the primary facade, contrasting with surrounding greenery. Persian-red voids punctuate the restrained palette, extending into central spaces as visual accents. The project continues the architect's exploration of brick as both a local reference and contemporary material. Interior green tones in the master suite reference surrounding vegetation, creating material continuity.

4Climate-responsive features

The building's form directly responds to environmental conditions with its elongated orientation. Southern openings maximize light and views while northern ones frame limited sea vistas. Subtracted volumes on both sides create inhabited roof spaces that integrate with the sloped form. Terraces and glazing systems mediate between interior spaces and the landscape.

5Programmatic organization

The villa organizes domestic needs around central visual connections. The central void gathers pool, courtyard, and landscape views into a unified experience. Private areas maintain more enclosed conditions while public spaces open toward panoramic views. The design balances expansive southern exposure with controlled northern openings toward the sea.

6Architectural character

Restrained massing and simple geometries define the villa's exterior expression. Carved openings become the project's primary architectural gestures, creating depth and shadow play. The composition balances solid white brick surfaces with vibrant Persian-red recesses. This contrast establishes a dynamic relationship between mass and void throughout the design.

7Spatial experience

Movement through the villa creates sequenced views of landscape elements. The suspended stair becomes a viewing platform crossing the central void. Interior spaces frame specific outdoor conditions - from expansive mountain views to intimate courtyard moments. Roof terraces extend living spaces vertically while maintaining visual connections to surroundings.

8Contemporary regionalism

The project demonstrates how regional materials can inform modern design solutions. Brick construction references local traditions while serving contemporary performance needs. Color applications reinterpret cultural references through minimalist detailing. The design achieves contextual responsiveness without literal historical references, proposing a forward-looking regional architecture.
