Ripple Prime Launches 24/7 Institutional RWA Perpetual Swaps via Hyperliquid
Institutions gain synthetic exposure to traditional assets with round-the-clock cross-margining and RLUSD collateral.
1Bridging CeFi and DeFi Infrastructure
Ripple Prime has launched institutional swap contracts referencing over 100 traditional asset perpetual markets listed on Hyperliquid by Trade.xyz. Rather than accessing the decentralized venue directly, institutional clients enter synthetic principal swaps directly with Ripple Prime as their sole counterparty, enabling seamless risk exposure within existing regulatory frameworks.
2Capitalizing on Perpetual Market Growth
This rollout targets rapidly escalating demand for non-crypto perpetual contracts across digital venues. Open interest in perpetual futures tracking equities, energy, metals, currencies, and ETFs surged from negligible levels to approximately $9 billion over the past year, reflecting institutional appetites for capital-efficient exposure unconstrained by legacy infrastructure limitations.
3Hidden Road Acquisition Catalyst
The product leverages Ripple’s February 2025 acquisition of multi-asset prime broker Hidden Road for $1.25 billion, later rebranded as Ripple Prime. The deal secured direct connectivity to on-chain derivatives markets, positioning the entity to compete aggressively in leveraged swap financing, an institutional domain historically dominated by tier-one investment banks.
4Eliminating Conventional Trading Hours
Unlike legacy stock and commodity exchanges with fixed trading windows, these perpetual swaps trade continuously, including weekends. Because the underlying contracts feature no predetermined expiration dates, trading desks can maintain long-term positions without roll costs while actively hedging macro market developments and managing downside exposure in real time.
5Arbitrage and Directional Strategies
According to Ripple Prime international CEO Michael Higgins, institutional clients are utilizing these swaps for varied strategies. Some desks execute cash-and-carry basis trades between the perpetual swap and traditional cash assets to harvest spreads, while others implement directional market views outside standard equity and commodity exchange operating hours.
6Consolidated Margining via RLUSD
A key operational feature is cross-margining across multiple asset classes supported by Ripple Prime. Clients avoid segregating collateral across fragmented venues, consolidating risk under one umbrella. Furthermore, where available, institutions can pledge Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin directly as margin collateral alongside conventional assets to back active swap exposure.
7Early Adoption by Virtu Financial
Market maker Virtu Financial has already deployed capital into the new swaps. Scotte Moegling, Virtu’s head of digital asset business development, confirmed that 24/7 cross-margining allows the firm to scale liquidity across emerging pools efficiently. Simultaneously, institutional asset manager Brevan Howard recently expanded its prime brokerage relationship.
8Jurisdictional Access and Expansion
The swaps are currently offered exclusively through Ripple Prime’s British Virgin Islands licensed entity. While competitors like Deribit list over 90 USDC-settled traditional asset contracts on their native exchange, Ripple intends to expand geographic coverage for its over-the-counter principal swap structure to additional regulatory jurisdictions without disclosing specific target dates.
