India's first private rocket successfully reaches orbit
Skyroot Aerospace makes history with the Vikram-1 rocket.
1Historic Achievement
Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, India's first fully commercial satellite launch vehicle, into orbit. This marks a significant milestone for India's space industry.
2Launch Details
Vikram-1 was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Sriharikota Island on Saturday morning. The launch was delayed by half an hour due to a last-minute technical issue.
3Rocket Specifications
Vikram-1 stands about 72 feet tall and can carry payloads of up to 770 pounds into low Earth orbit. This makes it slightly larger than Rocket Lab's Electron rocket.
4Launch Process
The rocket reached orbit using three solid-fueled motors and a liquid-fueled fourth stage. Each phase was monitored live via onboard cameras.
5Successful Orbital Insertion
Vikram-1 achieved an orbit approximately 280 miles high at a 60-degree inclination to the equator. This was very close to pre-flight predictions.
6Skyroot's Goals
Skyroot Aerospace aims to carry heavier payloads with more advanced rockets like Vikram-1U and Vikram-2. The company plans to develop fully reusable rockets in the future.
7ISRO's Support
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) provided significant support to Skyroot by granting access to solid rocket motor casting and testing facilities. ISRO also allowed Skyroot to use one of its active launch pads.
8A New Era in Space Industry
Skyroot Aerospace's success heralds a new era for India's commercial space industry. This achievement underscores the growing role of private companies in space exploration.
