Nigeria to Host Inaugural African Global Fashion Games in 2028
The event aims to boost Africa's fashion economy through manufacturing and policy reforms.
1Continental Fashion Competition Announced
Nigeria has been selected to host the first African Global Fashion Games in 2028. The event will feature seven distinct disciplines, including fashion design, textile innovation, and craftsmanship. These games are scheduled to occur every three years, rotating between various African nations and international host countries to promote continental creative talent.
2Strategic Industry Growth Charter
The initiative operates under the African Fashion Industry Growth Charter, which Nigeria officially adopted on November 5, 2025. This framework aims to transition the fashion sector from mere cultural expression into a formalized, high-value economic industry. It seeks to establish unified standards for production, intellectual property protection, and international trade certification.
3Addressing the Economic Value Gap
Current estimates value the African fashion economy at $60 billion, significantly lower than its $500 billion potential. CAFA President Aare Lai Labode highlighted that while 37 African nations produce cotton, the continent remains a net importer of textiles. The initiative aims to reverse this trend by strengthening local manufacturing and professional standards.
4Infrastructure and Production Goals
To support the sector, the Confederation of African Fashion is exploring partnerships with Austria and Turkey to establish a central textile factory. This facility is intended to facilitate large-scale production and provide necessary infrastructure for designers. The project has already attracted interest from several major international textile companies seeking regional opportunities.
5Institutional and Regional Expansion
Beyond Nigeria, Rwanda is advancing toward becoming the second nation to formalize participation in the Charter. Discussions are currently active with Liberia and Ghana to expand the network. Additionally, the organization is collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to secure formal adoption of the framework by the African Union Commission.
6Policy Alignment and Financing
CAFA plans to engage the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat and Afreximbank to streamline trade and financing. These efforts focus on aligning regional policies to support creative industry projects. By working with regional economic communities, the organization hopes to create a cohesive market environment that encourages investment and sustainable growth.
7The World Cloth Symbolism
A unique feature of the upcoming 2028 Games is the creation of the World Cloth. Participating countries will contribute a specific thread to this collective textile piece, symbolizing continental unity and shared craftsmanship. This collaborative project serves as a physical representation of the cooperation fostered by the African Fashion Industry Growth Charter.
8Measuring Long-term Success
The ultimate success of this initiative will be evaluated through increased local textile production and higher retention of economic value within Africa. By providing platforms like the African Global Fashion Houses, the organization intends to help designers access international markets. These systemic changes are designed to ensure African talent receives fair compensation.
